i could only tell the diff if i knew tracks very well. for me these tracks sound the same. something only for very welknown pop artists to worrie about i would say.
i like live sets with longer parts of just kick bass inbetween , well sounding kb fills glueing the tracks or parts of the tracks in the set.
released tracks have most of the time the classical 6 min. structure, a liveset has more freedom for me, can sound more like tracks are fresh from the studo and still not 100% ready/polished. tracks can be spun out longer also that way.
heard some years ago a live set from menog like that, was great, have to be good kb fills. dont know how the people on the dancefloor felt about it though.

| then my answer is if you only play tracks originaly as they are i will be - > and will hate you. the most crap sets i heard sound exactly the same as the album . dont call it live (dont mean you as you ) . i prefer a skillfull dj set anyday.

Take all of the sounds you used in all of your track projects and mash them up into an hours-long improv live set. It's possible and easy in Ableton. Today's laptops can easily process that kind of audio as well as run some synths and FX to jam on. My opinion is any "live act" worth their salt should be doing at least this. If not more.

for most tracks it's perfectly fine to stray from the original quite a bit. the live mix you posted is better than the original. (other examples where this works quite good: filteria - the big blue (live mix), etnica - trip tonite (remix))
on the other hand i don't really have a problem with artists who just play track after track just like on the album or changed just a little mix. that's not as "artistically valuable" if you want to call it that, but it surely works fine for dancing.
still, i'd be disappointed if an important climax/lead melody is watered down in the live mix. (examples for this: ra - time current (silver mix) or astral projection - mahadeva ('99 mix)).
so i guess you're fine as long as you preserve or heighten the epicness . don't play a floating, relaxed live mix where everyone will be waiting for the big climax in the original . at least that's my opinion on this... |

this is all opinion, but, as far as drawing the line, i agree with padmapani; as long as the live mix is equal or better than the album, i dont care how different it is.
with regard to live sets that are the tracks from the album strung together, I think it depends somewhat on the style of the music. especially in darker music, some artists are using so much automation, complex arrangement, etc, I think at some point it becomes very difficult to recreate this complexity in a live 'jam'. for me it is perfectly acceptable to have these complex passages prerecorded and then 'insert jam section here' or something.
but, back on topic, i do not think you can stray too far as long as its good

shahaf is teaching music at local music colleges here, djing once in a while his old goa tracks and making some new music i think not psy (some form of house). indica became space buddah with yallon adut at first and then by himself. mystica is now just yossi master and he is making some tracks as far as i know they are ambient like the last mystica album.
