Hey folks, when you record your synths into your DAW, how hot do you record at? I'm a super novice when it comes to recording stuff, so my only rule right now is...oh, I hit red, that's bad. Any info would be appreciated.

it s recomended to not record to hot for sound quality.. but depends converters..and the difference might be very little.. but less than -6 peak i guess is fine and safe
i don t like to boost level in the daw and rise noise.. make sure to record loud enough for the mix

my initial assumption was 'record as hot as possible without going red' but apparently that's more of an analog 'fighting the noise floor' technique...
So apparently in the digital world recording at a lower volume with the ability to cleanly amplify/boost it later is preferred.

yep you have to see what give you best noise floor if the ms20 is a bit noisy and it annoy you.. noise aside the range between -6/-10 db peaks is recomended for best recording..but it s arguable depending converters.. but it s safe zone.. |

My gain staging is as folows.
Mix the kick at -10dB.
Then when I record synths, I have their output at full, oscillators at max (if I want them to slightly overdrive the VCF as well).
Then I only up the soundcard's input gain to roughly get to where the synth part is going to be mixed according to the kick, in a way to not use unnecessary input gain from the soundcard and induce more noise.

the volume you go into filters and amps has a lot to do with the shape of the sound as well, so id imagine every different sound needs a litte adjustment to make it bloom,
a key part of the MS 20 sound as well dont you think

It depends what levels your converters are calibrated too. Most professional analogue gear is designed to work best (flattest frequency response, best balance between noise and clipping), at 0dBVU, which is around -18dBFS with most converters. So blasting things near to 0dBFS into analogue gear is likely to overload it somewhat, depending on the gear. Talking average levels here, not peaks.
