what are you purpose with the mbox, are you going to work with pro tools alot? is it to be able to be mobile and bring it over to friends?
if the answer is to be mobile and work with protools systems then maybe its a smart move but i would check for some other options aswell...

if you want a portable recording system i think there are a few to choose from, take a deeper look...

find you needs and also think what you want to do in the future with your music creation...

good luck...

If you want to use Pro Tools I'm pretty sure that Pro Tools M Powered (compatible with most M Audio interfaces) is better than the version of Pro Tools that comes with the M Box. Plus The M Audio interfaces will be more flexible and cross platform compatible between sequencers. I don't think you can use the M Box with anything other than Pro Tools. I could be wrong....
Do some research.

Basically you need a soundcard with inputs, as many inputs as you need. If you´re gonna use condenser microphones you need a soundcard that has phantom power. The better soundcard, the better the quality of its AD converters (to convert your analog sound into digital).

you can use any software like cubase, logic, pro-tools, etc for your recordings. Many people who just deal with recordings and audio work with protools (pro recording studios) but to do production with midi other sequencers are be a better choice imo...

You can buy an ok soundcard from 150E to 350E ,1000-2000E for a really good one (roughly off course)...
