First you will want to open up the environment view and go to the track on which you have the synth you want to automate. Just above the pan pot you will see the word OFF or possibly READ if you have written automation on here already. Click on this and a menu will open with OFF, READ, TOUCH, LATCH, WRITE, MIDI, as the options. In this case choose latch as your write mode. Now when you next hit play you will be able to play around with multiple parameters and the automation will be written down. When you have finished select read. You will also be able to edit your automation with the tools in the arrange view where the automation will be visible if you have selected it to be in the view menu. For a more in-depth explanation of what the different write mode options do have a read of the help files.
Hope this helps
