Cubasing is like Freebasing, just with audio.
Both cost more than you can afford, and leaves you sitting in a dark room with no life,craving for more. |

I bought a lacie 250 gb over a year ago for round 14000 rs.....
add that too the 250 gb on my mac pro, and 60 gb on my powerbook, its enough i think!!
Make sure u buy a good brand, that connects with firewire if u intend to load samples straight off it into your projects...
also with external drives if u dont disconnect properly when unplugging the firewire cable, u could lose shitloads of data, with the lacie i have, that doesnt happen, which is great!! |

My suggestion is :
Seagate Barracuda 500GB IDE ATA/100 16MB 7200RPM - around 150 euros
External firewire hard disk case - around 50 euros maximum.
I have two external disks like that(lower capacity and 3 years old), no problem ever and without even disconnecting safely. Never lost anything.
  A friend told me once that the biggest mistake we make is that we believe we live, when in reality we are sleeping in the waiting room of life. |

No, no problems whatsoever with mine.... Its one of the most sturdy pieces of equipment in my home studio!!
As far as assembling one yourself goes, it is the best option, as u can get far more for your money... But i just feel safer storing my data on a branded piece of equipment... |

I have & recommend GLYPH GT 050 PROFESSIONAL 250GB. It's designed for the grueling daily use of audio.
Features:
* Style: Table top enclosure
* Connection: FireWIre
* Hard drive size: 250GB
* QuietMetal: Eliminates noise and enables ultra-quiet operation.
* FireWire Bridging technology: Glyph's advanced hardware conversion technology that "bridges" the ATA hard drive interface and IEEE-1394 (FireWire) connection.

Another reason to build your own external HD is that generally the HDs sold as "externals" have the exact same drives inside the case... with a much, much shorter warranty.
HD manufacturers know that an external will undergo much more physical stress and will die sooner, so they give them a shorter warranty (usually 1 year for external as opposed to a standard 3 year for internal).
Some 3rd party external cases are cheap, some are great, you just have to shop around a bit.
I'm sure the one Jeto posted is great quality but you could build your own for less than 1/2 the price.

FYI if you are building an external and plugging in an unformatted HD to a USB port for the first time, it may not "pop up" as recognized automatically like it would if you plugged it in directly to a IDE or SATA port.
If your custom-built external does not appear when you plug it in:
Right Click "My Computer"
Manage
Storage, Disk Management
You can format new unrecognized USB drives there are assign them a drive letter. After you do that once and it has been formatted it will pop up automatically every time it is plugged in.
