I have a clarinet and trumpet I want to record onto my computer and was looking for some reasonably priced mics to use. I'm no pro musician, so just anything that will produce a decent result will be fine with me.

If I was you I would try the Rode NT2A.
It is a condenser mic with a very high dynamic range, and a nice flat frequency chart. It will set you back either around $450 online or you can rent it in many shops for like 20 bux a day. You will have a very nice recording, that is for sure! AND GREAT FOR VOICE AS WELL!
Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

If you're only going to have one decent mic, I suggest going with an MXL 990, just because it's full range and very clean. Doesn't get much better than an SM57 for recording a clarinet and trumpet, but you could use the 990 as a percussion/ambient mic later on. The SM57 only sounds great with vocals and instruments since it's response is around 70-15,000 hz.
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

I think I'm gonna go with the shure sm57.
What kind of cord do I need to get to hook it up to my m-audio fast track pro? I have no idea about this stuff and I've found for mic plugs are xlr, but the fast track pro has a different connection for the mic spot. Thanks.

The fast track pro actually has combo jacks...meaning they can accept 1/4" jacks or XLR at the same input port. I would choose an XLR cable instead of a XLR + 1/4" adapter.

SM57... Can pick up a XLR > 1/4 cheap. Mine came with one, so you may be lucky
