For the $200 range i really have to give it up for the RNC: http://www.fmraudio.com/RNC1773.HTM
I've been using one for a couple months now on my live set over the whole mix and it's been great. I don't really have the vocabulary to explain why i like it so much, but it's been helping a lot to get my levels straight, and it's been making mixing & writing much easier. it also sounds great on individual sounds (and kick & bass combo), but i'm not set up to use it like that very often. I can only compare it to my 3630 and 266xl, and now i never touch those units anymore, the RNC is a world apart from them.

SSL are TOP quality comp's, but also costs alot, the danish company Gyraf has made a DIY guide to an SSL-clone, and I know that the danish mastering engineer Holger Lagerfeldt really loves it, so check it out..

There is nothing wrong with a basic behringer comp. I use a composer pro MDX 2200 and it does it's job just fine. I use it mainly on bass lines. if your willing to spend a bit more you should look at drawmer. You could get a nice secound hand Drawmer. a DL221 Dual Compressor wouldn't be a bad place to start. I got my self a m500 which is a bit of an all in one dynamics processing deal and can do some really good stuff. http://www.drawmer.com/archive.html#dl221
hope this helps

Are you looking for a hardware compressor that will give you
better results than your current favorite software compressor?           >>> FOR SALE: Mac-clone OSX86 Audio Workstation <> Perfect computer for Logic 9 Pro <<<

I would personally stay away from behringer.

I dont know what Psyaudionamics you need it for,but for general task and if you are on a tight budget the DBX 166XL does a great job (stay away from the 266XL tho,the circuit components are different).

If you mean beetwen dbx and beheringer,

Dbx sounds good.Beheringer doesnt. If you have a chance go in a shop and try them both (possibly on good speakers, not some pair of dodgy ns10 or similar).

If you mean beetwen the 2 dbx,the 266 is a "re-edition" of the 166.The circuit is different and the outputted sound is much less distincive/high quality. As a matter of fact the 266 is cheaper nowdays, and if you google it you will see many ppl stating this.
I just bought my second dbx recently and i had a close look to the 266.

;-)

pm if you need more technical inofs i dont wanna really start a war beetwen beheringer/dbx/ whatever.

bear in mind that of course SSl,neve and other brand mentioned are better, but honestly for the cash that you pay the dbx ,you get an excellent deal.

i thought that the difference was that the 266 doesnt have a limiter but other than that theyre the same as 166 from what the dealers have told me...can anyone verify this.... makes sense to me

No it is not and if your dealer told you this, drop him coz he obviously doesnt know what he is selling.

What's the point in cheap hardware compressors anyway?
There's lots of free vst's that sounds much better than valve
Behringers with their special click in the attack.           >>> FOR SALE: Mac-clone OSX86 Audio Workstation <> Perfect computer for Logic 9 Pro <<<

i made the decision to purchase the dbx 166xl... is it more or less the same as the dbx60A ?????
compression wise...
let me know ur feedback if you have one or used one before, tell me your pro's and cons on this unit thanks guys..
im mainly gonna use it to compress my kick and basslines,, it's got a sidechain so i can duck stuff hehe

Nice choice, it's the simplest compressor you can find with only three knobs: ratio, threshold and gain.

But I read you wanted more control, right? There's no attack and no releae here. Also, there's only one channel, when some other have four... But if you only need it for studio, then it's the perfect choice IMO!

if you buy hardware compressor, buy class A. tlaudio, ssl, dbx are the best imo. dbx 165 (the one i would buy), tlaudio ivory's (these are very good sounding but not as aggressive as i sometimes want em to be), ssl would be great if i was rich...

Dude,did you ever see a dbx166xl?

It has 2 channels and have more than 3 knobs.
