A P4 laptop this fast is probably going to sound like a hairdryer in the studio. If you're going to spend nearly $3000 I'd really recommend a 2.1 GHz Centrino, which will blow the Alienware out of the water in terms of performance, and be pretty much silent most of the time - essential for working with sound. It won't look the same, but then you're clever and sensible enough to be choosing a laptop by its performance, rather than its looks, right? RIGHT?

Yeah centrino is much more silent, a p4 have ventilators that do really a lot of noise Oo
And centrino get much less warmer then p4....
A p4 with 3.6 is not so good just becauz of gigahertz, if you use a lot the processor, it get warmer and warmer and doesn't work so good anymore |

BTW another point look at is the power the cpu needs. I think P4 needs much more then the Centrino.

Had an inspiron 5100 with a P4 processor, and it was certainly a good buy for the price I paid. I was happy with the performance.
I now have a Centrino processor, and I wouldn't recommend anything less. Performance specs are sometimes tough to compare, but it is very efficient & very quiet. I've had it in bed with me (hehe, go ahead and laugh, the jokes on me) on top of the covers (i.e. air circulation is not great), and if I'm only doing word processing, or internet, the fan may only turn on once or twice in a 45 -60 minute period.
I have a toshiba satellite, and I'm very impressed with the quality. It's the Satellite 329, and the 15.4" screen is actually wider than the dells I've put next to it, which I find more useful.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Intel now makes Celeron versions of Centrino processors (i.e smaller onboard cache). DO NOT get a Celeron centrino. Your Celeron should have a 1MB cache or higher...I recommend the 2MB.

im getting a satellite soon, but it seems like it is consumer media centered rather than pro media. im sure its just all in how you use it.

I think you meant Centrino there, DL!
Machines with a 2MB cache are known as 'Dothan'... pre-Dothan Centrino laptops only went up to 1.7GHz but current Dothan Centrinos are available in speeds up to 2.1GHz which is (apparently) roughly comparable with a P4 4.2 GHz, although I'm sure some would disagree. My only personal basis for comparison is with a 2.6GHz Athlon XP+ and a 1.7GHz Dothan Centrino, and the laptop wins hands down.
