...that many tracks which production I don't like while listening to them on my monitors sound much better in monitoring headphones. This goes mostly to beginner/avarege level producers, and to mixing. What could this mean? Many people work in headphones? Or is that my room treatment? On the other hand I have 2 different monitor setups in different rooms and the impression of the tracks is often the same.

The impression I get is that people work on headphones due to financial reasons (good monitors and/or acoustic treatment are expensive) and/or keeping the noise levels down, especially in the late hours.
Could be the most accurate monitoring system if you ever get booked to play the silent stage in Glade

Maybe I misunderstood him, but Bill Cosmosis said he works with high-end earphones and $15 "multimedia speakers" with paper stuffed into their bass ports. I am sure he has a real studio set up too. But maybe those people you checked out don't. |

Its good practice to check the mix on cheap desktop speakers as well since that is what most people listen to music through.

Headphones help with visualizing a 3D space of the sound, speakers let you know if it's all solid.
Variations in the room, means unless isolating every reflection, it will color the sound in someway.

Do you mean the mix sounds better on the headphones or you just like the way the tracks sound better when listening on headphones?

Well, as I am thinking about it I guess it is the second option. Say, a mix might be okay, but some sounds are not in their places, a frequency is jutting out, another is damped, the kick doesn't fit, strange brakes, weird sounding effects... and so on. But when I put headphones and listen to the same track everything is getting right where it should be, and I swear, I understand why the producer did that to those frequencies and even agree that it sounds cool.
While I make music I use headphones a lot, as well as monitors, but I always do final mix on monitors, and I always work on the track until it sound good both on my monitors and headphones.
That's why I asked basically.

for me its simple and logic
listening environment vs production environment
on my BM6A in acoustic room you can hear every little detail (good for production less for listen)
on my cheaper setting in living room many things sounds ok much more then in studio
(bass boosts and other boosts apply for listening)

well, not sure it is that logical for me, considering that i have monitors and headphones approximately of the same level of coolness. they play roughly the same thing, both roughly samely honest.

maybe they produce on not so good headphones. in good phones it still sounds kind of ok, but good monitors really reveal the problems of the used headphones. when the problems are in the low its likely. |

i disagree,
What i've read is that you only precieve a believable impression of spatial positioning on loudspeakers..
also, a mix on headphones will sound more clear in your head because waves from left&right speakers will not phase.

Must just be an issue of no monitors/bad setup. Could also just be an issue of lack of skill.
About a month ago I started checking mixes on laptop speakers and headphones, but I'm still new so there's an equal possibility that my mix could still sound bad....

Headphones could easily sound better overall for a few reaons:
1) Isolation: you're hearing sound more direct, and not any room acoustic/reflection which can easily cause problems (standing waves/peaks & nulls, modal ringing, mud, etc).
2)Stereo separation: With each ear only hearing 1 channel, it will sound wider, and instruments could seem clearer & stand out more because of the stereo separation.
3)Proximity: with your ears that close to the headphone speakers, you'll be able to pick up finer detail. Because of proximity, there are also different technical hurdles that headphones do & do not have to jump in regards to reproducing different frequencies, compared to a full size monitor at a distance of X.
