Hello everyone,
For those of you who produce with Reason: do you have any suggestions on how to go about doing a live set? I produce all my stuff in Reason 2.5, and I'd like to be able to have as much control over the different synths and samplers as possible when playing live. If anyone has any experience either using Reason live or playing tracks produced in Reason with some sort of live setup, I'd appreciate some advice.
Thanks,
~V |

make sure you have an easily adjustible midi controller, so you can play melodies and be able to turn filter, resonance knobs at the same time (my M-Audio Radium would be fine). You need a soundcard with low latency. Probably best to have a lot of your songs prerecorded (beats, breakdowns, etc.) since u can only control one instrument at a time.
One thing I have found with Reason is that you need to do a bit of tweaking in a sequencer like Cubase or Logic to make it sound really good, so it may be best to work in Reason to develop your songs then enhance them in a different sequencer and play them live using Ableton. Reason doesn't have an easy multiband compressor (you can make one with a load of effects, but...) or a great reverb, compressor or delay.
I saw Basement Jaxx play on TV the other night and they were using Ableton Live, so worth checking that out.

Thanks for the replies.
Yeah, I have Ableton Live, and I've messed around with it a bit...it seems pretty cool.
saxopholus,
What do you mean about 'enhancing' Reason tracks in Cubase? I've heard people talk about it before, but never in any detail. What do you mean by it?

You can do live arrangements in Reason quite easily by muting and unmuting mixer channels with controller buttons or keys. You can also change patterns in ReDrum or Matrix in the same way.
As for 'enhancing' Reason tracks in Cubase, I think what is being referred to is using VST and DX plugins to get a good production sound out of Reason instruments, generally by ReWiring Reason to Cubase and getting separate outputs into SX/VST which can then be EQd and effected by processing of a higher quality than is available using Reason alone.
The new Reason reverb is actually pretty good and has some excellent multi-tap delays and spring reverb emulations alongside a collection of pretty sweet-sounding traditional reverb algorithms. It's got a gate section with external sidechain and an EQ section that is adequate for most needs; the general consensus seems to be that it's something that many people reckon would be worth paying for as a VST plugin.

hi ... what i do for live sets is that i produce my songs on cubase sx.. the master them a bit, and then i get them into ableton live, which is a really cool program, very versatile and stable. it allows u to change the tempo of the set at will in perfect sync, without losing the pitch.. it also allows vst so you can add efffects to the tracks. i rewire reason into it and have subtractor and maelstrom to play leads, tweaking it with oxygen 8. i find this set up very stable and fun!! ive seen many "professional" live acts just pushing play into cubase or logic and equing a little bit, and i think ableton and reason is much more interesting and dynamic.
see ya... |

Latency in reason is just as other sequencers, you just need to configure the apropriate sound output (i.e. drivers) and you're down to watever your computer can handle. It's also likely that your latency in reason will be smaller, cuz reason runing at full sucks litle processor |

I had the same questions about going live with reason... Some of them are now cleared, just one more thing... How long can a song in reason be, and is it necessary to load up all the different patches and stuff in ONE song ? You could need a 5GHZ cpu to do that, so, is there a way to have One Subtractor, and keep changing its patch ?

Having one Subtractor and changing the patch would be a really good idea... I would suggest saving all of the patches that you use for your songs in an easily reachable directory and you can quickly switch between them.. A reason song can be as long as you want it to be, and if you just load the complete audio file into Live, you can just rewire it to reason and run maybe 2 or three instruments with all of your patches...
