general concesus ... reason should be treated as a very complex VST for other DAW users ... now sonic possibilities have multiplies .. just wish they could do something about the sound quality!!

thor sounds like it might have improved sound quality, check out the funkychromepole mp3, quite nice filter there.
i'm not a reason user but this update peaks my interest. thor probly has some cool patch cable stuff on the back. it would have been cooler though if they had a made it a real patchable modular though. |

have been a part of many a discussion where reasons quality of sound output has been questioned .. latest update i've recevied is that the quality is not what is in question ... it's the output differential (dB) which is slightly lower than other DAWs!

You will see a comlpetely overhauled sequencer, a dedicated arpeggiator, a new synthesizer among other things I'm sure you can read up on their website.
Beta testing has begun but be aware that you will need to completely uninstall your sound library and re-install plus the beta will only work for one hour at a time.
I am getting a first-hand look this weekend of a full working version and I will post a complete review afterwards.
Regarding sound quality: IMHO I like the flexibility that other DAW's bring to the table by allowing third party plug-ins and the cubase sound engine seems to be noticably superior. I also like the fact that I've never experienced a single episode of the dreaded "non-responsive program" message or program crash using Reason. Check out James Bernard's Mult-Band compression refill through the Reason website - it makes a huge difference. Use the 4 or 8 band paralell compression combinators then A/B your track.

to me the old parts of reason obviously have lower sound quality just because of the time that they came out. I mean subtractor and that was made to run as a fully integrated system with multiple instances when a 300mhz celeron was fast machine.
One thing i notice on the screenshots of Thor is that it doesnt look like the oscilators have FM besides for that FM pair oscilator and the FM oscilator i assume are just sines? that kind of blows for psytrance. |

Well I had chance to see it first hand yesterday since I live close to one of the key sound designers and liason to propellerheads. he was gracious enough to come over and allow me to peer under the hood of R4. Beta testing is well underway and they hope to have it shipping in 3-4 months.
I'm not totally familiar with all of the features and specs but here are a few of my observations.
Thor synthesizer and it's related combinator patches absolutely blew my mind. The filters sounded amazing - one example was using a choir patch with it's X-Y style formant filters. Very advanced yet intuitive GUI for this synth with a 16-step on-board sequencer (only sixteen steps? yes but there is a way to have longer patterns using multiple instances triggering thor sequencers in series). The sound quality is exceptional, different than what we've heard with subtractor and malstrom (warm, analogue, FM type sounds in some cases and downright fat and dirty too depending on the oscillators). This will certainly be the 'go to' synth in the rack. I want to be careful not to 'overhype' it, but really reason users have been waiting for something like this for a long time. And the thing that struck me the most about Thor was it seemed ideal for electronic styles - IDM, psychedelic, downbeat. There are over 600 patches and combis for this instrument alone and they blew my mind. I was told that the designers spent a lot of time on the programming and have become quite good at it - it shows.
The RP8 arpeggiator: well we did not spend much time playing with this but it does add some pattern variations I haven't seen before. It seems easy to use, flexible, and much more capable to the task than a Matrix Sequencer. Unfortunatley, this is the only new effect device that was added (I think).
Sequencer: Mostly graphical changes here, looks more streamlined and visually appealing. You can now mute clips similar to the X tool in Cubase and there is a 'razor blade' tool for cutting parts. Automation is also handled with actual points now, just like in cubase. And you can work with midi clips in a much more flexible manner - similar to Cubase and Live. Unfortunately, you cannot size the rack to full-screen - I was hoping that would change.
ReGroove Mixer: I didn't spend much time on this either but it seems that this will be useful for treating loops and rhythm in general, changing swing, groove feel, etc. I think there's a lot more to it that I didn't observe so I'll shut up on that for now.
And yes there is a master tempo track now so you can alter the tempo of your song as automation. I didn't hear about a way to apply it to individual tracks but I'm sure there is a way. Two types of time display. A pop up window with groove shaping tools. And lots more I am forgetting but I will add as I remember.
Cheers!
