Ok, I've been making music for the last 2 years, and converted to only psytrance in the last 8 months. I have reason 2.5, but I keep getting the feeling that there are better programs for music creation out there. Some of my buddies said that Cubase sx is a killer system for any music genre creation.
The bonus is, I have Cubase Sx, but I'm not sure if I should go through the pain and agony of learning a fairly complex program when I already have a substantial amount of knowledge on Reason 2.5.
Bottom line: Could someone pleez tell me the pro's ond con's o Reason 2.5 and Cubase sx? |

i the same as you started with reason and then moved to cubase.
reasons synth and effects are good but you just cant get pro sound only out of reason especially because of the sequencer the eq and the comp. ,their just not good enough, also you cant get good bass for trance with the reason synth.
so you have to move to cubase their is no question about it.
all what you dont have in reason you have in cubase ,and you also get a much more variety if sounds and effects from vst instuments and it supports audio.
so bottom line - move to cubase and use rewire . |

Ok get ready for a story , might be some good things in it
In the earlier days i switched from some tracker on my computer ,to reason 1 , I thought it was a bit of a challenge to figure out some basic manouvers , but after a while i got the hang of it ,my music was getting better ( imho) a bit later i updated to rsn 2.5 when it came , there were some cool new machines and i played around with it for some time again ,suddenly i got more interested in having more options than the rfl's and my downloaded samples could offer , i changed to an earlier version of cubase , and today i use cubase sx 2 and plan upgrading to sx 3 . Ive been bitten by cubase if
i may say , First Of all the jump isn't that far
from reason to cubase , the thing is u can put these two programs in rewire , and then in the beginning just make a track in reason , import it to cubase and use cubase's Fx's . This is a simple way of learning some basic manouvres in cubase , and Soon u will be adding some vsti's and playing around with them , and so on and so on , i used reason for alot of things in the past , and two weeks ago i started using only cubase , dont know if my sound is better , but my way of music thinking has changed .
I would say , some ppl have managed a great deal with programs of less possibilities Rsn 1 for instance and so on , but then u need some other tools for mastering Imo , maybe invest in some Sound forge or wavelab and some vst's dxi's or
T-racks for that sake , .. but then again , u could learn Cubase in the time it takes u to learn all of these things
Well and then cubase supports audio, just plug in a mic ,u can tempo track ,timestrecth ,timewarp, split loops up with hitpoints and edit them how u want to,freeze ur vsti , and download Bundles of Free very cool vst and Vsti's, so imo go for cubase also , but stay with reason still . Use them in rewire

Rishi and dj tuk are 100% right. Personally i never used Reason because i'm using Cubase from the very early years when it was on Atari. Lot of people i met during the last years were and are using Reason. But the sound quality is much lower simply because the audio engine of cubease is superior to reason's. |

im not a reason fun at all but ithink iff the developers add vst support it would be much easier to get much better resoltes from this program cos its not bad its just limited to its structure
fuity loops is not pro as they sey but you can get excelent resoltes out of it cos of its open arcitecture
oohh yes to stay on topic go for cubase you will do better things on it use reason rewire

i agree i recently moved from reason to using vsti's with cubase [cheers alex!] and ableton however i've begun to explore ableton a bit more because the latest version 4.0 fully supports MIDI, whereas version 3.0 was more just an audio program. I hear ableton is very respectable and with each upgrade they continue to improve the program to a new level without losing it usabilty. I'm in love with VSTi's after using reason. Reason seems like a piece of crap after merely touching a note on some of these babies... |

Reason is a great tool for getting ideas together very quickly, although the sequencer is a little clumsy and lacking in many of the refinements that make eg. SX and Logic more powerful when programming MIDI. I sometimes use it as a Rewire synth rack in SX; if you pile on the effects devices you can make some fantastic sounds, but in general I find that detailed EQ and dynamics control is best done by Rewiring the sound into SX and processing it in Cubase.
IMO, the two programs make a very powerful combination when used together as a single system.

I agree with Colin. Speaking from experience, even if you are going to use just Reason, it's still better to use it through a Rewire master, so you could mix your track with other plug-ins. Reason mix capablities are minimal. Another option is bouncing all the channels before mixing, but you'll get into a lot of trouble and waste of time.

Logic below version 6 doesn't support ReWire 2.
Once you setup Reason, Logic is not hard to setup for rewire 1.
Every track on the mixer can be a rewire channel of Reason. You need to set the CHN of a track to Instruments -> Other
Then u'll have a list of all the rewire channels that reason installed.
I suggest if you work with reason alot, to prepare a template mixer with all the rewire channels assigned.
cheers. Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

Using Rewire makes cubase a very powerful tool! Nowadays I´m composing on reason with a friend vía messenger, so we had to figure out how could we get good sounds out of it... believe me: It is possible (obviously production on SX is a must) |
