Im not an expert on mastering issue but this is my way of mastering: EQ, Compresor (low ratio), limiter.
about stereoimager i never got good reasult , maybe im using the wrong one but i think the ozone imager is good because you can spread high frequeincies more and leave the low band centerd.

| In theory, you could copy the track filter both versions and only put widener on the part with higher frequenzies... A bit li8ke the suggestion in the beginning of this thread.
By the way: It does work, and is a good way around if you don´t have a multiband compressor(whatever multi-dynamics processor)

I wouldn't suggest doing that separate track thing because it can lead to phasing problems. The filters in multiband compressors/effects need to be designed carefully to avoid phasing, so applying just some filters/eq yourself might not sound that good. Yes, separate tracks gives you freedom but just to be on the safe side I'd use plugins designed for it (ozone, linmb etc) |

I think ATMA is right in that its best to fix your mix to sound as perfect as possible. Mastering can only do so much, and even the most talented mastering engineer cannot completely remove essential mistakes in a mix.
If your mix is really good, then mastering is alot easier, since its mainly about adjusting balance with EQ, and raising level with compression and limiting. A balanced mix will not need a multiband compressor, while an unbalanced mix might need a multiband so you can compress some freq bands more than others.
For good mastering and mixing, the most important tool other than your ears is a good room with good monitors, otherwise you just cannot hear what is really happening, and all that you do will be colored by the monitors and/or artefacts of the room (standing waves etc).

PS Shouldn't this be moved to the mother of all mastering threads?

from my expirience , "pro" mastering (based on my 5 realeses so far) done some very good stuff to my early mixes , and ruin my best.. i rather my home mastering over some "pro's" . and some can make your track pure party candy , whatever the gear they used or not.. sometimes a track is perfect and all you need is some limiting. specialy if i use compressors on the groups (bus). and know what you want to achieve , from the very begining.

groups or not i beleive in the importance of compressor on the master to glue all parts together and add more RMS level.

well the most importent thing is to watch out the master channel during mix and to see that your mix is at -5 or -6 db b4 the clipping point so the mastering procces will have some dynamic rang. |

does va master includ take all trax to the level of the worst one out of them ?
i feel its just not right.. for me.. from now on i insist to compare my master to the labels one , and i choose which one actualy realese!

This is a common issue with people doing mastering. Do you try to make every track sound its best and then have some tracks stick out as being obviously way better than others, or do you master everything to sound similar (not nessecarily the same as "the level of the worst track"). Its a difficult decision mastering engineers have to make but usually the label wants a cohesive product so sometimes the gloss might actually need to be taken off of a track to make it fit in.
