Reaktor is a modular platform in which you can create your own synths and effex. However there are heaps of 'ensambles' available that other people have created. You can get those from the Native Instruments online user library if you are a registered user.
oh...and by the way....just to let you know...Reaktor is already at v.5.0

Yup, Reaktor is the shit. I use it a lot and it's really the only synth i use besides my Virus. It's also amazing for effects.

It takes some time to get used to it, but it has a clear user manual, with some examples. If you follow those examples and build your own synth and effect units you get the hang of it pretty fast.

It depends on which kind of ensemble you are running how much it taxes your CPU.

it's like boobytrip says, cpu depends on the ensemble. Since it's modular u have to think diferently then with normal synthesizer.

example, u want to make a bassline with reaktor... First question, what do i need?
well, u need 1 or 2 osc's with a small variety of waves (pulse-square-saw, with pulsewidth). Then u need a good LP-filter 24dbPerOct, u don't actually need an envelope on the amp, but it doesn't hurt either. U will however need an envelope for the filter cutoff. u will need an amp too (i know, it sounds stupid, but in a modular synth everything is a module, even the amp). And then ur already finished So what we have is 2osc's, 2env's, 1LPF, 1amp, and then just wire them up properly... voila, ur ensemble is done, and this ensemble will not fry ur cpu

ofcourse, this is just an example, but that's how u work with a modular synth (although the name synth is actually not good enough anymore for reaktor)...
