ReactOS® is a free, modern operating system based on the design of Windows® XP/2003. Written completely from scratch, it aims to follow the Windows® architecture designed by Microsoft from the hardware level right through to the application level. This is not a Linux based system, and shares none of the unix architecture.
The main goal of the ReactOS project is to provide an operating system which is binary compatible with Windows. This will allow your Windows applications and drivers to run as they would on your Windows system. Additionally, the look and feel of the Windows operating system is used, such that people accustomed to the familiar user interface of Windows® would find using ReactOS straightforward. The ultimate goal of ReactOS is to allow you to remove Windows® and install ReactOS without the end user noticing the change.

Sounds interesting, does anyone have any experience with it?           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

So does it include all of the problems too?           You believe in the users?

I like the ideas they present, but what about TinyXP?

And how is the security.

^Exactly..very few people actually buy any OS. An upgrade if anything, which usually isn't that expensive. Not worth the trouble when you could just use XP, imo.           You believe in the users?

How did they recreate the OS system files like DLLs and such if it is entirely closed source?

Even WINE, which has been in development for years, doesn't run every program perfectly.

I'm skeptical.

ReactOS has been in alpha for years and although I haven't tried it I would think that it will have issues like wine.
With .dll's I don't see the problem though, apart from a distribution perspective. They probably run fine under reactOS if you just add them to the installation.

And there is a lot of stuff in windows that is not needed. Personally I don't use hardly any MS software...shell, explorer, task manager, browser, email client, notepad, paint, MSN, WMP...all are without a doubt crap programs with much better alternatives available. So it would be great to be able to compile only the OS itself and then be able to run windows apps on it.
If a project like this would be successful it could be a very good thing for the software world and be the software equivalent to when IBM had to open up the PC platform.

If you want a stable system it seems like a bad idea to run an alpha of any OS, but this could be interesting in the future for a DAW since you then only need a few core functions of the OS.
Unless they manage to actually make some improvements I can't see any technical reason to use ReactOS, but it's always nice to use OSS and get rid of that nagging conscience that I don't buy enough licenses from MS

Whoa there buddy, don't disrespect notepad or paint. They're my go-to copy and paste program for text clips and printscreens!

Windows Key+R, "notepad", Enter, Ctrl+V

If ReactOS was even smaller than TinyXP, used less resources and still run a DAW. It would be the ultimate OS for us. Personally, I can't understand why anyone would use Vista for a DAW when such a huge chunk of resources are wasted.

To prove my commitment - I bought a new laptop last week with Vista preintalled. I'm proud to say that Vista never got a chance to boot. I formatted with Tiny first thing after I opened the box.

Amazingly enough notepad can not even perform an operation such as copying a piece of text ok...just selecting stuff can be real fiddly sometimes. For example, you know how in every other editor you double click on a word and it selects that word?

It's better replaced with for example notepad++...just replace the original notepad and you never have to see it again and instead notepad++ will open when you run "notepad".

Unless you have replaced notepad I doubt very much that you never have suffered from the missing ability to easily select a certain piece of text, lack of syntax highlighting and no tabs.
Actually I cannot think of any software more worthy of disrespect...it's a basic text editor that is hardly a major undertaking for a company like MS to get right, but they shipped it with the same flaws in Windows version after version.

And paint...yes it works for copy and paste if the formats you like to use are supported, but there are very lightweight free alternatives that copy and paste just as well but is also ok for image editing and drawing. There are really no redeeming features of paint that makes it not worth disrespecting and certainly no reasons to keep it as a basic image editor/drawing program.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)
