 i see, it is done with a camera feedback. this makes it even more intriguing.
i was just doing some research and some video reports about another experiment recently - the so called brain avatar. in this experiment the brain frequencies can be seen in the water - like a vibration of sound on the water surface. this vibration on the water is then projected through a camera into a screen, including sound that is mathematically recognised through the visual vibration of the images.
and thus a direct bio feedback can take place. the inventor ( martin schöne) did experiments with some lamas, yogis, with some ppl on acid and with some kids. very interesting study - but unfortunately i can only offer detailed information and video on my website in german.
but what if this experiment is connected to the reactable sound experiment, so that we can sort of move the cubes through a brain frequency? actually it sounds absolutely logical. i have to bring this to the inventor of the brain avatar, of course absolutely by chance i will meet him exactly this week and see this exactly before the meeting. strange world.
but it will be cool to make all of this sound just by channgin our mind and our brain activities. i need to find more information about how the camera recognises the pattterns....

so it is now clear what is the model of the experiment:

shape: generic object classes
- sound generators: square, cube
- sound processors: rounded square
- mixers & modulators : pentagons
- control generators: circle +
- step sequencers: polygon circle +
- synchronizers: dome (half sphere)
- global objects: round star
the shape is detected through image processing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_processing and then optically sorted. afterwards the shapes interract according to their distance to each other. the projector creates a wave between the objects - a graphical synthesizer generates visual feedback based on sound.
i suppose that they use this method of digital image processing, but certainly not in this form: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morphological_image_processing
but it is an open question for me what is the method exactly. i guess it is not a hard thing to do, since all our e-government is based on that - recognition of faces, fingerprints, (+ age and mood in the research fields of the data mining advertising industry).
compatibility and distance are the main criteria for the interraction between the shapes.

where are the revolutionaries in the vj activities?:) we are not gonna stay 15 years and more in the same procedure arent we?

i am very sceptical about the ipad app.
i was sceptical in the moment i got the email about it. i thought they were making science and not some marketing campagnes for ipad apps for kids.
why for kids. because the app is technically exactly the same thing like any other app on touch screens for making sound. where is the groundbreaking symbol recognition . these are just forms that you touch. it could be apples and green trees aloso.
i am dissappointed. but my brother loves this kind of apps on the ipad. i just dont see any difference to all other types of it. or may be someone can argument the opposite?

Was going to write something about the original Reactable layout soon being eaten by cheap multi-touch screens, but it did itself.

Moki; if you want a sacred geometry version with bio-feedback and crop-circle recognition, maybe you should go for the D.I.Y. solution...

Hey Zoolog, this is really a very interesting idea that you have. And to me, it is even more interesting that i was thinking about the same thing exactly in the moment you wrote the post (i was swimming in a swimming pool and touching the water in all directions and observing the movement of the waves.. and i was thinking about the stars and the macrocosm and then i came back and saw your post).
i was thinking about what would be possible to do with astrology signs on a touch pad that are able to do music. and sign recognition of astrology and astronomical infos. i have to really ask my brother for a do it yourself solution, he programms apps for apple and might be of big help. i bought a ticket to fly to him right after your post...i know what i wanna do, but i dont know how to programm the app. thanks for the inspirational idea.
