Im hooking up my Audiophile card to my DJ mixer and need RCA cables. Is it true that expensive cables are just marketing ploys and that standard generic RCA cables sound exactly the same as say cables from Monster Cable? Or is it worth the extra cash?

Try to find a good compromise. The superexpensive cables are imho way overpriced.
I use the cordial cables, not really cheap but also not too expensive. They have good plugs from neutrik, gold plated (good against corrosion), serviceable (you can open and resolder if you need to modify the cable).

Also a difference between cables is the flex, some are stiff, some more flexible, some tough some not.

as always try to keep em short, i soldered some of my own cables from scrap (was suppose to be temporary i just wanted to test a few things) but it sounded fine so i just left them .
oh and some places try to sell you "shielded" cables that are "balanced" and have "virtually no noise" don't fall for that, RCA is not a balanced input .

They should be shielded, for sure

But balanced cables need alway 3 contacts on both sides and have therefore XLR or stereo-phone plugs.

Theres one more thing you can look on when you need chinch connectors, some have the outher contact cut several times, so it clamps better. The cheap ones have just a metal ring which fits or doesnt, or others just cut this ring one time.

With good cables you can go up to 8-10 meters (which is already a lot) with balanced more.
As Leon said: try to keep them as short as possibl
