He mentions it as "Silver Flute" in the Shpongle sleeves.

it is a metallic transverse flute as AvS says, but the difference is in the way you play it (the style, the way you blow). actually raja ram uses the rock way of playing the flute and not the classical way. to anyone that knows who Jethro Tull are, their singer/flute player Ian Anderson was the first to introduce this rock way of playing the transverse flute. hope i helped

I dunno if we are thinking about the same flute but anyway shpongles instruments are great and they
really sound amazing.
I have heard various flutes with shpongle, especially i like the flute in the sixth revelation 3:52
and i would really like to learn to make this flute.
I believe that some how it´s made of a female vocale which is sliced and rebuilded. |

Btw. I asked this exact same question to a flute player about a month ago (that's how I knew the answer:). I just read hér reply again and she also said that he might also play a wodden flute some places or it could be that he just playes his regular metal transverse flute in a special way because the sound is a bit darker than a regualar transverse flute (and also very warm sounding). I got a feeling that it could very well be Simon Posford doing something to the sound...like putting it through his ARP2600 like i know he does with drums. |

What is a transverse flute? How does it differ from a normal one? |

a transverse flute is one you blow across, as opposed to a flute you blow in to.
Hard as hell to play (you have to learn to blow a thin stream of air at different thicknesses for different notes), but extremely rewarding as you can get more expression out of it than with a regular flute.
do a search on google for "transwave flute" and you'll find tons of examples. |
