Hello Everyone!!
As the subject suggests, this topic is about radio stations. Specifically Internet Radio Stations.
I was wondering if someone could help me understand how this business works in terms of playing music.
I mean, if i wanted to start a radio station i obviously can't play a particular artist/label's music without their permission right?
Does that mean i have to go to each one of these labels and ask for their permission to play their music?
Can someone please explain? Label Owners, have you guys been approached by the radio stations? Anyone runs an Online radio station here? Can you please give some advice? Does it need a lot of money to start?
A friend of mine wants to start a whole psy project - i.e his website, forum, music, releases, etc etc etc and he's got this whole grand plan. one of the things also included in the plan is the radio staion but he doesn't know much so i told him i'd ask around and give him some info, so if someone can please help it would be great!!

I think you'd have to sign up with the PRS/MCPS equivalent in your country. And there are radio licences involved when opening the radio station officially. Do that and you'll be able to play tunes out. Mind you there are a lot of radio stations that just play tunes out without caring.
But yeah, in the UK the artists get money when their tunes are aired on big radio stations (i.e. BBC Radio 1) from PRS, so they'd more than happy for you to play their tunes out.
