well if the track has kick and bass from start to end, no breaks and all sounds are very compressed and the mix is tight and you use hardware limiter like MaxxBCL then you probably can make something sounding not too bad by -4 or -3 RMS
but thats not the goal.

I feel the need to remark that at -4dBFS you are referring to a sine wave RMS calculation. (AES17)
At a square wave RMS calculation, the value would be 3dB lower. -7dBFS. These levels also fluctuate through out the track...

damn, my lack of knowledge has made the question hard to answer.
k, i'm in ableton 8 on an unmastered track, and the overall volume level on the mixer starts at -4dbl and pops up to -3....
thats as far as i've gotten so far, i will, however read up on everything ya'll have mentioned..... |

I like to give about 3dB of headroom for the mastering engineer to do their thing. Although effectively it should be the same thing as me bouncing a mix to -0.1 and them taking the fader down about 3dB?
But what I want to ask, do the relative levels that the mix is playing at, have something to do with the sequencer's summing engine, resolution?

-8 or -9 rms global loudness sounds reasonable, again depends on personal taste and style of music, because production and mastering are so polarized, i would highly suggest not to master your own work at a professional level. |

yes .Master it at amateur level I think - 8 and -9 rms is waay to loud.
Or it is pain for ears it should have almost no dynamics with such end result or db rms.
Some of Xenomorph tracks got an avarage of -12 and it sound great at least for me.
..louder than lots of those with a louder avarage rms.I think because of good mixing skills.
