Peak, or RMS? The RMS 'limits for a big system' change depending on what tools you're using, and what you're doing with them. Peak level generally remains steady at -0.1dB no matter who does the mastering, but I would suggest that -2.5db - -4dB RMS is probably too loud.          Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

-4dB RMS?! I wonder what tools one can use to get things so loud and not making the mix sound like shite.

well if the track has kick and bass from start to end, no breaks and all sounds are very compressed and the mix is tight and you use hardware limiter like MaxxBCL then you probably can make something sounding not too bad by -4 or -3 RMS

but thats not the goal.

I've had people I'm sending a track to be mastered to say -6dbfs.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

I feel the need to remark that at -4dBFS you are referring to a sine wave RMS calculation. (AES17)
At a square wave RMS calculation, the value would be 3dB lower. -7dBFS. These levels also fluctuate through out the track...

k, i'm in ableton 8 on an unmastered track, and the overall volume level on the mixer starts at -4dbl and pops up to -3....

thats as far as i've gotten so far, i will, however read up on everything ya'll have mentioned.....

Sounds like you're talking about peak levels then, in which case you can turn it up as loud as you like as long as the level never goes over 0dB.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I like to give about 3dB of headroom for the mastering engineer to do their thing. Although effectively it should be the same thing as me bouncing a mix to -0.1 and them taking the fader down about 3dB?

But what I want to ask, do the relative levels that the mix is playing at, have something to do with the sequencer's summing engine, resolution?

With a fixed-point audio engine, the louder the mix, the more bits it uses and the better the S/N ratio + dynamic range.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

so its best to bounce at -0.1DBFS? Obviously with no processing on the master channel.

Check with the mastering engineer; I'm happy accepting tracks that loud (every process I use has an output level control, after all) but many others ask for headroom, for whatever reason.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

-8 or -9 rms global loudness sounds reasonable, again depends on personal taste and style of music, because production and mastering are so polarized, i would highly suggest not to master your own work at a professional level.

yes .Master it at amateur level I think - 8 and -9 rms is waay to loud.
Or it is pain for ears it should have almost no dynamics with such end result or db rms.
Some of Xenomorph tracks got an avarage of -12 and it sound great at least for me.
..louder than lots of those with a louder avarage rms.I think because of good mixing skills.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden
