i always work with a spectralyser. earlier with the logic one now usin gRME DigiCheck. when u create a kick/bass. be sure it volumes are not clipping over the line u give. i work with -15 db for the bass section.
The 16khz cutoff is a mastering thing. i work with -20db on the hats cause the highs are ways to loud on big PA systems if set in linear.
may your kick cuts exactly at 16khz. there are frequencies u sometimes dont hear.

for me when i work with -15 db in the bass (means from 50 hz to ca 150hz, depends on key) holding the peak there.
it follows the midrange section
there I work with -20db with digicheck u can check every single signal and see wich one is peaking over -20db
and thats " the mysterious line" u give. understoodable? |
