first of all i'm no expert but after 2 years of experimenting and learning from tutorials i can avoid nearly all peaking although playing a lot of instruments together.
my way of avoiding peaking was
1.) start producing with kick (-10db) and bass (-9.5db up to -10db)
then a lot of times i boost the freqs JUST FROM THE KICK at approx. 40-60hz. in my experience the power comes from the kick and not from the bass. i guess thats what Taii tried to advise you. so first of all try to boost the low frequencies of the kick. then also try to use compression on kick and on bass seperately. this will give you more power in your tracks and often makes the bass "come out of the track". just try a lot of times and you will find your sound.
note that you should remove all frequencies below 40 hz. esp. for kick+bass. you can do it on a send channel where kick+bass are routed e.g.
2. now adding drums (snare,hats ...)
now you can see with a spectrum that the volumes turns up a bit when kick and snare are playing together (at 2 and 4 e.g.). this is the result that the sum of several instruments playing together also raising the volume!!! esp. snare is playing on a wide range of the spectrum. in this case you can cut the frequencies below 250hz e.g. this frequency is where kick and bass are ranging. NOT the snare!!! so you should could all that frequencies.
the next problem is that hats are playing in high fregs and they often collide with leads sounds. in this case you should cut or move your lead frequencies or change/cut/move the high frequencies of your hats.
REMEBER : the sum all instruments (esp. playing in the same frequencies) raisees the master volume.
ANOTHER trick is to pan the instruments. i often play 2 or more melodies/sounds (from different synths) together. and a lot of times they are playing nearly in the same freqs. so the answer was panning. synth1 a bit to the left speaker and synth2 to the right. this can be VERY helpfull and also gives much more interesting results!!!
so ... when starting with kick+bass at -10db -> after adding percussion, pads and leads your master channel sould end up to -7db or -3db. EDIT : don't care about raising kick+bass to -9db or -8db during producing. sometimes it's necessary to raise them A BIT. but after all you should end up to -7db or -3db!!!
if your master is at 0 or higher somethings wrong. now you should REALLY hear some very quiet classic music for 10 minutes and the try to mix again so that the result will end up to -7db or -3db!!!
now you can add some "mastering" tools (maximizer, multiband compressor) if you like.
that was the way i learned mixing and i don't know if everything is "correct" but after 2 years there is no clipping in my tracks anymore and the sound is very well now.
maybe i could help you.

edit : ok forgot to say something about FLStudio: ALWAYS leave the master level IN THE MIXER AND IN FL (MASTER OUTPUT VOLUME) at 0db. and don't trust the FL clipping display. just use a free spectrum vst e.g. on the master channel to analyze your sound. i don't know why but i had similar problems with FL at that time. now i'm using Ableton Live ... it's more comfortable for my workflow at least. that is no FL bashing but with that case i don't trust FL anymore |

something it make me think about is that daw don t show all the peaks above 0 db , you can have cliping few db above zero and still no red light with daw or most plugins metters , if you wanna really control this and avoid them, a metter that show reconstructed signal is welcom like the one that come with rme digicheck or rme console for does using rme card(dont remember i think you have to turn oversampling on if there is setting like this ) or ssl have a free one on their web site. anyway if you don t mix neer zero db it s useless in most case and my ears tell me these peaks don t neccessary sound bad ..still i like to avoid them when possible (if you want to get really loud it s hard to avoid them , it s a compromise and limiters that remove these peaks most of the times are less transparent when the option is on in my experience)
here a link that explain it http://www.gearslutz.com/board/tips-techniques/334385-intersample-peaks.html

man if you have the kick bass above 0 on the master it s sure to make trouble, like mentioned about you should keep them more quiet, maybe put all fader down ,turn up the kick to around -10 db and then turn up the drums so it sound good to the kick , then the bassline, then the synths line... all the tracks like that.(you can use bus/group and send some tracks to them so you can control their volume in the mix with just one fader, very usefull when you gett for example the beat right to control his volume without trouble of selecting all the individual tracks) |
