Hi everyone! I'm come to a point where I just don't know what choice to decide on. I currently have a pair of Focal Solo 6's and I love them. I've been wanting to buy the Sub 6 for them, but so many experts have claimed that 1 sub is worse then having no sub. Im not currently in the position to spend $3700 canadian on 2 of them. So, I've been looking for some really nice 8 inch speakers that have really good clean deep representable bass, that are $2000 canadian or less. Any suggestions regarding products, or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

try the sub man and send it back if you don t like ,for bass heavy music a sub can really help if set up properly and the room is ok ,i tried one in my room and have the adam p22 wth 8 inches woofer too but on the sub the low end is way better, sub just have to deal with the low end , it s made for this so i guess a good sub is really hard to beat in the 25/100 hz by monitors in your price range... you can still send it back if you don t like in many store.and maybe check the more recent cms sub i have read few times it s better than the sub6.(there is also velodine subs that are suposed to be great ,dd serie have xlr i/o) |

i have noticed on the net ppl are often against sub woofer but i guess it s cause they dont make bass heavy music.. the few engeinners i asked here told me i will get a more detailled low end with it and it was very ttrue .we use a friend car sono as reference since maybe 10 years..these time are over as soon i ll get the sub back,i dont even want to mix wihtout now... but how you set it up and the room matter a lot ,if you have big peaks or nulls in the low i m not sure it s good idea but if it s flat but just fade naturally and lack low end a sub could maybe be a good addition. |

The question which comes into my mind is do you have any room treatment yet? If not, I'd spend the money on absorbers before investing it in new speakers.

Thank you PoM for your input. @ Eleusene, I do have acoustic panels, but ive moved to a new house and the landlord doesn't want me putting holes in the walls so I have them resting on boxes for now behind my speakers. I don't have the sides of the room treated, but I have the back treated. All i'm using right now is bass traps, but Im thinking about buying some foam stuff for now to compensate until I can figure something else out. @ PoM, the cms sub is a good idea. I shall consider it, its quite a price difference too. But does it have all the same technology as the sub 6? For instance the polarity, and phasing knobs? |

only problem with the cms sub is you can use it only with monitors that let you filter out the low end(like the focal monitors ) it dont have a filter to remove the low end from monitors like the sub 6 and most subwoofer so when using with other brand of monitors the bass of teh sub and main will overlap . (but i know some mix like that with great sucess so not sure it s really a issue and it s possible to use the sub as reference to check the mix and then bypass it with foot switch anyway.)
you have to really set it up right or it will sound crap , first try to set it up on the ground facing you ,in the middle between the solo . the sub and the solo at equal distance from your head to get them in phase and then measure with a program to see if everything right and adjust the phase if it s not, or it s possible with test tone too you will find all this online. you may have to chnage your mixing position and monitors/sub position to get the best results (juste 1 meter can make a very big difference) |

I have a pair of Solo 6 BE's so the crossovers on the CMS are the same as the Sub 6 |

here you may find some helps
http://www.digido.com/subwoofers.html
from focal if you set the sub and the speaker at equal distance from your head they should be in phase.(that seems logical to me, but the sub should be on the ground so it mayb be closer to you than the monitors to be at the same distance of your ears)so you just have to check with reversing the phase (some sub need it and some don t if i remmeber what i have read..) and check for equal volume of the sub and monitors at the crossover like explained on the site on top, or if you have a mic to take measure you can use some freesowftare to set everything right.from my experience when you tweak everyhting , it s like a sweet spot where it sound great..way better than when it s not set up properly ,i had the cms 65 + the sub at one meter from me and it sounded like i m not using any subwoofer at all but the cms 65 where on stereoids with very clean and deep low and way more dynamics. |

but man be sure you can return it , maybe it won t work great at your place i dont know , but if it dont work, no speakers with deep low end will work anyway and the sub may be better in the room than these cause it s tweaked to be flat with the reflection on the ground ,it make it far from the ceiling at same time so i gues it can help a lot in some case ... |

i use a pair of yamaha's hs80's plus their sub, my mixes are 50% better thanks to it, saying without sub is rather better than with it is like owning an engine less ferrari! |
