Question on this bass, and distortion

Hi all,

I'm curious how to get in the ball park of this bass sound.

There's a gritty saw wave apparently with the cutoff being modulated over 2 bars... but that's about as close as I'm getting.

What's the rest, giving it that super heavy insane sound? Distortion?
I'm not very experienced with distortion yet if that's the case, any pointers in the right direction at all regarding this sound would be a huge help!

I'm curious about the midi/groove as well. In just trying to study that opening bass groove, I'm not coming very close to getting something that drives like that.

Many thanks:

Yeah, i'll bet some nice positioned distortion/saturation can do the trick..

You'll probably get closer if you layer it. Take your bass (sine w/Fm, saw, your choice?) and a low saw lead:
-low pass you bass really low (probably 150Hz i dunno)
-low pass you lead (around 400/500 Hz) and high pass it a little below the frequency you used on your bass (say, 140Hz)

Then treat the resulting sum as your bass sound. It probably would help applying the overdrive (distortion) on the high bass lead, and a little saturation on the low bass.

Regarding the MIDI, it's nice and curious, fits well mathematically while justapositioning with the kick. I'm not that good explaining it, but I believe it goes like this:

1bar
K---K---K---K---K---K---K---K---
B---B---B-----B---B---B---B-B-B-

the K's and B' might not show as I wanted, but (+)
-the first 3 kicks have the bass playing at the same time (some nice almost unnoticeable side-chain is a must)
-then the 4th kick drops without a bass (somewhat surprising the listener, giving it some groove) and the bass comes every 3/4 of a beat (like KBKBKBKB), for 3 kicks
-only 2 more kicks left in the bar, so he plays 3 bass notes during the 2 kicks, where the first one starts between the two kicks.
-each bass note is sustained (it doesn't die when the "-" are shown). Don't forget to leave a little tiny space at the end of each note (making it sorter), so it can breath.

A little variations here and there and it's done. Right now I'm with headphones, but it seems like it's all in one note (the starting bass that goes up to 4:00). In order to make some "notes", he automates the filter cutoff every time the bass pattern changes in the 1bar (so 3 ways, as mentioned in (+)), just as you suggested. However, the freq maintains constant during each of these pattern, jumping to the next frequency. You could probably make it cutoff at a certain note frequency to make it more melodic (while still playing only one note).

Just my 0.02€ (which now in Portugal won't even pay for a tiny drop of gas..), and that's how I'd approach this tune if trying to recreate it. Hope I helped!

that bass sounds like its been put in a chorus... that explains the modualtion i rekon wiv a lil LFO on the cutoff, ya dont need to layer it just get a plugin that will allow u to put 0-120 in mono on same channel then muk around with a nice chorus eq n alil saturation and maybe compression
the low end probly sidechaind as the quantize hits on the kick note... this bass aint as hard as u think to do ya kno,,, its been slightly widend also (due to the chorus.) ya nned a mono maker will save u time rather than layering it... not unless u use the M/S two channel approach to have control over how wide u want that bass to cut through without the maskin leads...but thats another story

i may be wrong but the bassline sound like it has been spatial delayed wiv alil bit of widening... could be chorus or sum plugin that allows u to piss about spatially
