What is really latency? I know it's some kind of delay caused by your hardware...
But why is it so fucked up to have?
From what I understand, it's only problematic when playing live. But if I'm not gonna play live with my PC, then why should I worry about latency?

Latency,
is the time it takes for your computer to process audio. Everytime you play audio, your processor starts working hard in order for you to hear it now and not tomorrow.
with drivers like ASIO or EASI, which comes with low-latency soundcard, it is possible to reduce the latency and let the soundcard take control of that processing instead of the CPU working on it.
which means - less job for your CPU - and this way you can free space for more Effects and more samples to be played in real time - without clicks and fast. It's much easier to work this way -

Thanks man... --> I'm getting a new soundcard pretty soon.
Creative Labs Extigy
This should fix a lot of problems then. Latency is exactly what's giving me trouble right now.

the extigy is probably one of the worst usb soundcards to choose if you want to make music and play at low latencies. in the same price range you can find edirol interfaces that were made or music specifically. if you have a little more money to spend the interaces from emagic are right now the most feature rich on the market.
let´s make one thing crysal clear. even though some might argue otherwise creative soundcards are not good for making music end of story.
and when better interfaces exist in the same price range you should take your time and investigate the market. it´ll pay of in the end.

I see...
so you recommend Edirol hardware. I've never heard of it though
A friend of mine has Extigy and it works pretty good... so this is why I thought of getting it too.
Anyway, since you recommend to look better into hardware, I'll do that. Thank you. |

A suggestion:

Look into the soundcards made by these guys. I am using the Layla 24 and I have no complaints. They have a few different models in different price ranges.

latency effects only midi appz, that means if u like to arrange .wav, there is no problem with shitty soundcard ( it works cpu-wise ). otherwise if u like to play vsti's (...that like to do all of us ;-)=) than u have to care about latency:
< 10 ms for good results.
an other advantage of a good card is that u ve got better quality too.
i use hammerfall 9636 and i m very happy with it http://rme-audio.de/ . the price seems to be high, but it has very good latency ( < 3ms @ 900 mhz ) and the quality is also very good. and of course u ve a very good support in case of the drivers (...latency is much about coding, so the drivers are very imprtant ).

I took a look at Layla 24... she looks really beautiful. That's a really good soundcard...
I'm in Costa Rica, and there's no local distributor for any soundcards (except Creative, which was why I was gonna get an Extigy)...
What online store do you think is the cheapest? |

I have the M-Audio Delta 1010.
You should check their Delta series:
www.midiman.net
I guess it all depends on your budget, all the cards recomanded above are also a good option
When buying a soundcard, make sure it has dedicated low latency drivers, all the outputs and inputs you need and a "good name". |
