In Ableton you can play notes on your regular keyboard, no need for a midi. Although I think most people agree that having a midi keyboard helps your productions.

In cubase I'm pretty sure you have to have a midi keyboard to play notes (you would just have to draw out midi notes without one).           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Cubase 5 also allows you to use your PC keyboard, but that sacrifices the use of hot key shortcuts when enabled.

you can use any daw without having a midi keyboard. i started out with logic and no midi keyboard but i eventually got one and it makes the whole process a lot easier once you get used to it. i'd highly recommend getting one.

Midi keyboards can be very cheap too:

If you just want something with just keys that's a good start. There are other midi keyboards out there with more octaves that aren't too expensive.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

why shift when FL offers right click and midi learn on all native plugs and processes , the easiest midi mapping of all sequencers i think , very easy with 3rd party stuff too .
