how much does an artist get for 1 track in a compilation?

Depends, from nothing to something. Of course if you manage to get kind of known then would be possible that you could get some "descent" money.
From my experience, for every track that was used for a compilation in Greece, i got nothing. The fee would be calculated upon sales. And of course the sales were never enough for us(the artists) to get anything. Just to cover the production costs for the label. I knew that anyway, so i did it for the pormotion only.
The first tome i got paid(for a compilation) was a couple of months before for an ambient track that was included in a compilation from a label in US. I got 350 US dollars and that was all. A flat fee and nothing more to get.

For release on CD, a relatively unknown artist usually gets "18% pro rata numeris", and an advance on the day of release for a track. So payment depends on sales.
Known artists can ask for more, upfront as not to take risk, and different deals are done for albums, have heard several different labels offer the same artists different things.
I suppose that still doesnt answer the question; how much?
Cytopia.org does variable percentage for online release as download, up to 60% earnings for the artist; but sales are dependant on promotion, which Cytopia.org can only provide within limits for each artist.

from nothing up to as much you can ask for.
offcourse its individual
in psytrance (dark prog fullon etc.) it moves usualy between 200$ - 500$ , as an advence , or after realese depend how good is your track , how big is your name , and how you know to negotiate.
also , alot of labels are just a rip off , beware (i recomend even to agree for 70% advence , instead wait and just maybe to get the hole amount)

He's lying, telling you there's no money in the business, but in reality the artists are swimming in money and he doesn't want you (or anyone else) to get in the biz because then he'd have to share it with you.

But seriously, the money is not usually in the releases, but in the gigs. For a gig you can ask about 250-7000€ (or more) depending on how big you´r name is and how easily you get gigs. This puts the whole CD-releasing thing on perspective: Releasing a track or album is mere promotion for selling gigs, wich means you really can´t count how much it really is. If you get nothing from an internet release, but lots of gigs, you´ve still earned something. You can still earn enough to make a living (for a while), but you have to be seriously creative to make it work out. Making music is one thing, promoting it is a whole other chapter, which might be even more important. Not impossible, but really REALLY tricky
I am no millionaire, but I do have a feeling that you only can become filthy rich when you stop thinking in money, and start thinking in the love for what you do. A day-job can also be seen as a part of making music, becouse by working you really are making it possible for yourself to make music. At the same time you start noticing how much you really like to make music when nothing stops you: If it takes to do shitty jobs from time to time, and you don´t care becouse it makes it possible to do what you really want, then so be it. It also sharpens your mind, your will, gives you self control and you get really creative, just to make it possible to do what you want.
But yes, about 200-500 in advance. If you see it in money for the hours you worked on the track, you only get depressed

Why would you feel depressed ? Because you've spent hours doing something you love and managed to get paid for that in the end ? You should be glad really no matter how many days and hours you worked on that track ... imho always.

totaly agree!
i know lots of artists that tries to compare the amount of time spent on a track on the amount of money it will bring...
this will not generate a soulfull track.. IMO
money and true creation has nothing incommon
still in the end when you feel that the track/album is finished you can always put your own price on it.. but more a worth of affection..
maybe you want 5000$ for one track,
but sometimes you got to be realistic, and Love is to give and dont expect to get..
and give as much as you can.. im sure karma will take care of the rest..

I doubt very many comps sell well enough for the label to be able to pay the individual artists any significant amount of money, if any at all. The major benefit of comps is cross promotion, the label produces the CDs, sells them, and also gives some to the band to sell, and people will buy the comp for a favorite band and then get exposure to all the other bands. I have sold most of my CDs this way recently, having not bothered to release/promote anything other than comp tracks since 2002 |
