Question for anyone who's played on a big system

Easy question - how does low B (circa 30hz) sound on a big system? I have a bassline in Em that drops down to the B for a bar or two... I don't want to change the key because it's meant to mix harmonically/mashup-styles with another tune in Em I have.

Edit: to clarify, I am always hesitant to go below low C @ 32hz, seeing as my monitors cut off at 40ish anyways...           Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. ~Kurt Vonnegut

From my experience on a 6.5k and 12k opus audio system, anything in the 20-30hz range receives the same power and has the same punch as the 30-50hz kicks and basslines. On other systems I've tried, the bass becomes flabby in the 20-30 region.. This is why I never play psytrance on crappy rigs as you lose the definition

How do you figure out if the system is crappy beforehand??

Ask em and do some research. Funktion One and Opus are the only systems I've heard that do justice to psytrance at high volumes it depends whether you would sacrifice a slot at party for the sake of your set sounding good...           http://www.soundcloud.com/architektnz

oh cmon that's just rubbish.

I've rocked psytrance on my fucking monitors out in woods at a 8 person party and it was the shit.

Was it as loud and clean as a Funktion One? Hell no.

It was still enjoyable though. For sure there is a 'time and a place' for certain types of music but the day that I say the system isn't good enough for me to play psytrance on it is the day I become a prick. My 2 cents.

Seriously - you show up to a party and they don't have a F1 or an Opus and you are say 'nah man, can't play psytrance on it..not good enough for me????'

If someone did that at a party I threw I would certainly never invite them to play again.

ontopic: I've played on pretty large systems and I've never had the experience of playing a track and saying 'hmm...this sounded great before but now it sounds terrible on this system'

I'd just focus on getting it to sound as good as you can get it on your monitors + whatever other sources you can test your tracks on.

Oh - and make sure to get out in front of the speakers when your track is playing and see how it sounds compared to some other pro tracks that you've played in the same set (assuming DJ set of course) - that's been very helpful for me.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

My lowest basslines are at C1, which got reproduced loud and clear from the Function 1 system I played at last summer, in Sol Fest.
Can't help with B1 I'm afraid, although I trust it will be fine.
Bare in mind this depends where the FOH guy has the omnidrive/rig high pass filter as well...

Peace out.

That's exactly what I wanted to point out. Sometimes the guy can hipass everything below 35 or so. Means it doesnt always depends on the rig itself. Anyways I am sure the rig will play B1 without problems.

this summer ive played in vuuv and in a greek fest with a difference of 5 days between them.

at vuuv iono stage the system wasnt very loud but the sound was clear and deep enough to reproduce easily some tracks we had with low register basslines.

in greece they had a huge nexo system it was very loud and very clean but the bass wasnt equally strong.
the tracks sounded ok but lost some of the punch down under.. but they worked ok.

if the mix is balanced properly not much problems in different systems.

its a different story in clubs tho.. cos many other factors take place like placement and room size.
small clubs with big rigs tend to make the bass boomy if the engineer hasnt make some subtle cut bellow 35hz.           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

Savage answers, thanks all. It hadn't even occurred to me that it might be hipassed. That shouldn't matter, imo, seeings as the mix so far sounds fine on monitors that cut off at 40hz. I'd rather have that than have the entire room rattle.

I remember seeing Sensient live in a tiny loft with a huge sound system and having heavy steel crates in the corner oscillating violently (and audibly). It was pretty trippy, but not exactly acoustically ideal.           Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. ~Kurt Vonnegut
