helo ppl , recently i have have heard from a few people that it is not a very good idea at all to boost any freq while eq the bass , further .. its not good to use plugs such as max and r bass and other boosters as it just makes the mix more muddy, my question is to the ppl who have been doing it for long and / or professionally .. u agree with this ?
thanks and regands

if I agree?
yes and no.
yes rule of thumb is not to boost frequencies, yes those bass enhancers can add mud - but, it is sometimes essential to boost certain frequencies (don't have to be the low ones) to make the bass play 'at your face' and yes sometimes using a bass enhacer plugin can help reach that stubborn sound you really want.

I've had most luck so far by leaving the bass untouched and instead tweaking the source sound&midi programming unless I'm after a special effect.
However it could easily happen that this will change in the future as my ears & skillset matures.

dude... think of it like a sculpture......
When u carve stone or wood into a sculpture..... u select a piece 'big enough' to allow u to 'chip away'.. revealing the sculpture'........... u dont 'add' bits of stone or wood to it.....
I see 'Bass Creation' in the same way...........
take a 'Big Fat Ugly Knarly Bass sound/patch.. whatever...... something that.... when looked at in a spectral analyser....... contains pretty much all freqs under the sun
....... then using eq, compression, maybe the odd enhancer.... whatever.... you shape (sculpt) the sound u want..........the Sculpturer 'chips away material' to reveal the statue..... and u should 'subtract' away the freqs u dont want (EQ).... to reveal the 'Bass sound' u want....
... that is my personal approach..... (but if u dont have a 'decent' pair of monitors.... then u will have difficulty 'sculpting' anything of worth (as I found before I bought Studio Monitors)

@monasticsquid
wow man this is the most visual explanation I've met. As myself was a lot years into real sculpture, compare the constructing of a good bass-kik chain (they must be thought as one) is really just like sculpture!!
i do it this way. when i choose bass and kik that go togather i put some spectral analizer so that i can see where exactly are the protagonist frequencies of evry one of them. then i cut freqs on the other instrument exactly where the other punches. but this are very subtle touches. like lowering with -2db with a Q of 0,4 on the 80Hzs the bass (if there the kik strikes mostly) an than lowering in the same way the 100-120hz of the kik so that the body of the bass can emarge too. but if i apply Rbass the EQ I apply after it. if i make it reverse it loose sense as any EQlization u make on the bass-kik is easily destroyed by later boosters. so first the boost (but not extreeme) with the rbass (100-120hz f.e.) and than i put the EQ and become to play a lil so that the two monsters fit into each other. as a puzzel...
Thinking of music as making 3d objects is a very right way to do it.

hey there boys! another bass thread
fun fun fun fun (!)
i agree with the idea of thinking the bass equing as a sculpture, when you bandpass the signal and take out most of the midhighs and higs, and ofcourse some of the sublows. thats the most graphic example anybody can choose. then add a moderate compression and you are done!
on the other hand, im in favor of the bass boosters such as max bass, or rbass from waves bundle, if you go slow you can get a very very good results. i havent tried any other boosters, but this have awesome quality.
cheers brothers!
i dont know other boosters apart for

For bass sound the Sub Bass plugin that comes with Logic audio will give you an excellent result for subsonics.
When its time to mixdown, just pass the audio bass line track via Logic and export back to your main sequencer.
And another great booster is Crysonic Live.
Its a very good plugin, just tweak around the parameters and you will love it.
Last one is Delaydots Fat Pro, for all bass fatness.
Hope it helps.

there are eq's that colour the sound and others that work very clean. on basslines it's interesting to use colouring eq's and boosts into positive ranges. often it's funny how all comes together. if you reduce a frequency band on the kickdrum, it often works together with a boost on the bassline in the same band.
always keep in mind that +6 db is double as loud as 0db. so never boost more than +6 db. (I never do)
as far as bass harmonizers work, it's suggestable to read the tutorial from waves. They write that one should only add the wet signal of those plugs until you start to hear the effect. Personally I prefer working with voxengo lf-punch btw.
one tip I'm having good results with is to use two eq's on the bassline. why 2 instances? one controlls the sound before it hits the compressor & bass enhancer and the second instance at the end of the effect chain to shape the sound to your taste.

man its all bullshit i dont heard your original bass how can i know its good or not to cut/boost anything ?
if your bass only start @ 70hz with no low end (sub)and got huge "hole" in 200hz , you sure need some boost and Rbass.
