are you referring to call and response?

You just have two (or more) instruments or sounds go back and forth with the melody for a period of time. See the example at 4:12 into this song:

The guitar, electric violin, and keyboard do a sort of call and response (or trading solos) for 8 measures (bars) then 4 bars, then 2, then 1. So this technique can be applied with any number of instruments or sounds for and duration of time (although shorter periods are usually more effective).

Bottom line: Use the trading, or call and response, or question and answer, or whatever to make it sound sweet

Question and answer are indeed important, you can use anything to create that, most people do it with lead, it can be done with percussion, fx, even kick bass ! Choose what you would like to use and then go for it!           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

almighty Mahavishnu Orchestra are real viruosos.Love it till my last day.
Question and Answer comes actually from Blues , take one scale and try to use only those notes and try to ask something trhough a line of notes and give an answer a bar later ,.experiment. For more intelligent or abstact deep quesiton take a note out of the scale as a word or two in your quesiton Dont forget the emphasis intonation - nice to travell through some octaves etc.
-you can support later on you quesions with smooth short chords upon some notes or a nice 48th slide maybe somewhere in an answer hehe there are lots of ways.Or give a few breaks before a new question of only perfect fourths' over octaves is also nice. Also nice not to ask short quesitons ,question over a few bars and the same with the anser.Bulid waves of notes.

Oh man that is amazing... I am seeing Zakkir Hussain this spring here in Vancouver!

I quite think Q&A is usually not found in electronic, but I think it makes a great way to bring some life and a 'human touch' to your tracks.

I quite like to have noise melodies or melodic melodies and use alt. percussion (i.e. not snare, open/closed hats, etc.) to complement them in a Q&A fashion. Helps to break up the melody and to insert percussive hits without having them step on toes in the frequency spectrum...           --

a easy way is first you make a lead with good ryhtm and melodie like usual... then you explode the midi line in 2 or 3 or 4 track with each a different synth patch, then you choose what note of the inital melodie each track play.. you can change octave ,adjust note size ,play harmony what ever you want and sound right with the patchs used. not sure it s clear..
