Question about using filters

Hi Guys,

I have a question about something that I can never get to sound good and that is hi pass and lo pass filters on the kick and bass.

How im doing it right now is just using an EQ (my go to one is usually the logic stock) and just automating the cut. Somehow it ends up sounding very average and not cutting through the mix nicely. The lo pass sounds too muddy and hi pass to tinny. I end up pushing the the gain on the compressor to make it cut through which sounds OK but it seems like there has to be a better way to control the harmonics. I feel like I should be using more frequencies with the EQ instead of just the slope or maybe some filter plugins. Also, is it more effective to filter the kick and bass seperately or as a group?

I hope Im making some sense without sounding like a total idiot. I would like to know how other people work in getting an effective filtering effect.

Thanks!           StarLab - Label DJ/Artist for Digital Om Productions

what are you trying to do?

the standard fullon-filter-sweep on the kick and bass? for that it's better to use autofilter (in logic) on the bus with kick and bass. a bit of resonance sounds good too.

that could be about taste.; and it s long time i ahven t used it for this cause from what i remember the logic eq filters are not really suited for cutting low end transparantly.. acutally most eq aren't but some type of filters are more or less suited

Thanks for the responses. Sorry if I wasnt very clear. Yes I meant the typical filtering sweep effect on kick and bass. I find the logic EQ to be perfectly suited as a standard EQ but not for getting that nice filter sweep. Havent tried Pro Q as yet. Gonna give it a shot and see how it goes.           StarLab - Label DJ/Artist for Digital Om Productions

I wanted to write it earlier that 'filter fx' are better to this job than eq filters           http://www.beatport.com/release/cross-the-atoms/1042450
