this discussion is getting old.. one guy in front of a lap-top = playback in some way or other. i dont care how much or how little he does - i only care about the music. its not like i am so concerned about what happens on stage anyhow - if i was i would rather go see a rock band smash their guitars and make asses of themselves.

a little self promotion.. this is my live setup. i always use the drummer, who is spectacular.. and sometimes one more musician, like in this one:
ftp://scene.org/pub/parties/2008/breakpoint08/concerts/bp08_concert_xerxes-and-friends.mp4 (warning: 1 hour concert, filesize is 400mb or so).

when i do sets alone, i just dj mix my own tracks - however - they are not carbon copies of the originals - i do make special "live" versions.

Well maybe you are not too concerned because yo never found yourself in the position where you had to choose beetwen booking a live act ,say for 2,000$ or same artist dj set for half of the money, then I assure you you would be very concerned about this.

The comment about rock band smashing guitar as the only act worth to be seen live, left me jaw dropping.

I guess for you having a jazz band playing doesnt mean anything then,or keeping it close to the electronc music ,say Nerve or Nils Petter Molvaer which if i remember rite is from Olso ,is like...."whatever"?

Sorry mate I strongly disagree with your last statement.

Its time we put this thread back into OTT live experiences and not whats live and whats not, even thou i am guilty as charged with planting offtopic seeds.

you completely missed my point here my dear. ofcourse i love going to concerts.. or shows as many like to refer to them as. nils petter molvaer is, as you point out, from norway, and does excellent live shows. both from a musical standpoint, and from a show aspect. but they dont have 1000 dollar budgets for lighting, stage setups etc. they have maybe 100.000 dollar budgets.

so when psyfestivals book artist, like ott, the stage itself is pretty lame in comparison (usually).. and the show value isnt even close to what the big (huge) mainstay artist can come up with. so.. again, i am left with focusing on the music, and only the music. if he does nothing behind his laptop - i dont care. if he presses a million buttons - i dont care. i am there for the music only.

so to sum it up.. if i was interested in seeing crazy stage shows - i would in large part also have to change my taste in music. and since that is not an option, i would much rather chillout to OTT having a beer behind his laptop than seeing axl rose behave like an animal on stage.

I think its you missing the point.
Nils Petter Molvaer is all about music palyed live, who cares about the lighting?
Jazz is all about music played live.
Live music should be played live, with or without a fancy stage, period.

Sorry for going off topic. And again my comments were not directed to specifically to OTT

word i appreciate all the feedback..in all honesty i really could care less even if it was a dj set, just him spinning his records..i go for the music as well xerxes but was just asking a question since ive never seen him before

.ive seen events(not actually seen them but the flyer) where it has ott booked as a dj set and or a live set. i was just curious if his live sets had some tweeking to it. like if billy the kid played "live" sounded exactly the same off of blumenkraft. anyways again thanks for answerin my question and im really looking forward to seein him soon

listen. why are you attacking me like that. i'm the one who made a point - how can i miss my own point? when OTT does his live in front of a computer - i will listen and enjoy myself if the music is good (which it is)..would you not enjoy it because there was no live band to support it? sure, jazz is all about the musicians and the music. but _to me_ jazz is not that much fun listening to regardless of how spectacular the musicians are. i would rather listen to a guy in front of his computer.

if you think THAT is missing a point, it's just us having different musical preferancens and not about missing anything.           www.xerxes-music.com

IMHO the most important thing when it comes to hearing OTT performing is soundsystem

You want to FEEL those basslines

I can't remember his live set very well, tho I do remember that I enjoyed it.

His dj set at the end of the Rainbow Serpent Festival was just him, his laptop and a smile (and a beer if i remember correctly) laying down other peoples tunes in a dubby vibe. It was almost my favourite set of the entire festival and a great way to close down the sound. Loved it!

Joining in the discussion here...I've talked at length with Ott about the kit he uses over the years, and he recently played a live set here in Los Angeles with his new rig.

When he plays live, he uses Ableton Live and his new rig which includes a PC laptop, Kaoss Pad, and Allen & Heath audio interface/MIDI controller (sorry, don't remember the model but it was HUGE and plentiful). The music he plays is all his own original stuff, separated out into different sections - drums, basslines, melodies etc. This gives him freedom to tweak each section at will, all the while maintaining the overall structure of the original track as you've heard it on the CD. He does *indeed* have a stage presence, most often a vigorous nodding of his head with his eyes closed and a big ol' grin on his face. It's infectious.

When he plays a DJ set, he uses Traktor on his laptop and plays *some* of his own music (including a myriad assortment of his remixes of other people's stuff) plus a lot of dubby stuff and other interesting chill tunes. Most often when he plays a DJ set he's more able to interact with the crowd and can be quite the showman.

Having seen the lad play four live sets and two DJ sets in the last three years, I can definitely attest to a marked difference in what you see and hear in his live sets, if you know his music well. If you don't know it well, you will likely still have an incredibly good time anyway due to his engineering skills which means superb mastering and production values.

There really is quite a difference between his live sets and DJ sets, and I personally think the man earns his money each and every time he plays. A consummate professional, easygoing and gregarious with everyone he interacts with. Well worth the fee, in my opinion.

you can be sure he will play England is a Bitch by LKJ.
and another of couple of reggae classics....always in the same sequence since 3 or 4 years....he will blink at you at the right moment...and he will mime to push those buttons (since he don't even need to do that).

(I suggest to get drunk before the gig...the all thing will be magic).          "There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain will never improve, and that's here." Aldus
