I've got a nice pair of genelec 1031a on it's way to my home from Germany. My question is: The dude who's selling it recommends me to plug a physical device between the computer and the monitors, like mackies "big knob". I feel that I'm out of money and I thought I wouln't need anything more to start to learn producing psy with my computer. This is what he says:
"The problem is: With your speakers turned on, how are you going to control the volume....what if your system crashes and you software volume peaks.....when you are monitoring one thing and recording another you can forget what is where and send a peak through your speakers....and whammy...."
Do you guys think it's necessary for me to get ONE MORE device? The genelecs were expensive and I'm not Bill Gates... |

well, I think you could just buy a Behringer mixer, quite cheap, and (for my needs) good!
I guess it is better but keep an eye on signal loops...That could really "whammy" your Genelec gods ok?

by the way, that guy also said
"I just think it is better to have some kind of hardware based volume knob in
between that you can always reach up and turn down while making
adjustments.....
These can also damage your speakers if you just have cheap bullshit...."
humm so how do I define what is "cheap bullshit" that can damage me genelecs and what's not? Ketzah recommended me a behringer mixer. So I thought about this one http://www.behringer.com/MX602A/index.cfm?lang=ENG
what do you guys think about plugging this one between my monitors and the computer? Will it decrease the soundquality? And most importantly, are they "cheap bullshit" that can damage my monitors? |

This is probably the dumbest question ever throughout mankinds history: why can't a Dj-mixer (like pioneer djm300) be used for this purpose? |

Not a dumb question at all. I am not sure if I am right but I think it can not be connected because it is not the same cable. Who can confirm this? |

I have a behringer Eurorack UB802 (60,- euro) between my soundcard and my monitors. I had some bad peaks before (due to software-crashes) and was afraid that this could ruin the monitors. So I decided to spend this money to prevent higher costs in case of damage.
And now I connected many more things to the mixer than I thought I would. (CD-Player to listen to music even when the PC is off, Headphones, individual speakers for my kitchen... ) So it was a good investition.

A lot of soundcards today can perform this kind of things(like changing the volume), that can help u when u want to make the volume higher or lower.
A good point of buying a mixer is the pre-amp, used for mics. But few soundcards, like Motu 828, has also the pre-amp.

Martyn: this sound promising but won't a cheap mixer like that one decrease the sound quality of my genelecs (1031a) very much?
SMS: I have the E-Mu 1212m soundcard and unfortunately it has no volumeswitch |

Yes, plugging the monitors into a cheap mixer will defeat the purpose of buying really expensive monitors.
You do have the ability to plug the monitors into the pioneer mixer, but doing this isn't any better than plugging into the berhinger. The reason is because you will have to use a XLR to RCA cable and the RCA connection will degrade the sound.
If you are spending that much money on monitors, why would you want to ruin the bennifits of that purchase with cheap gear inbetween?

many soundcards allow to change volume (either in hardware or in soundcard software
anyway, if u use the pioneer mixer while you can´t afford to buy something better i don´t think its the end of the world...i used a normal dj mixer to control the volume of my monitors for quite some time and at that time it was quite helpfull |

I can't belive you bought those monitors and didn't think about that, oh well.
I for sure would not want to connect them through a cheap mixer. My advice is to make sure that only your sound application will use the 1212. make sure that the system sounds go to the internal card and turn off the system sound while you're at it. In your sound application put a limiter plug-in in the master section, set the treshhold to max. always turn the computer before the monitors, wait until the system loads.
BTW: how they sound like ?

Thanks for sharing your ideas, folks!
So let's say I'll buy a mxier. I doesn't have to come with 4342356 line ins och outs and it doesn't have to have 892545 channels. BUT, I don't want it to decrease the soundquality from the speakers too much. In other words: I don't need a lot of features and functions. I just want the sound that comes out of my speakers will be in good quality. Do you have any suggestions about a mixer that would fit those requirements? |
