How should my levels be set before sent to mastering?
My kick and bass are peaking at 2.2 alone.

mix your tune, then turn all your faders down equally from where they are at until there are like 5-8 dB headroom is what I do, but there is prolly a better way.

By hearing ..
Also this is not only about volume , This is more about feeling (Already wrote it somwhere before , This is not about numbers , Mathematics and those , This is kind of physics) . Working on each sound and sound and bring/Give him the right machines , Effects/Compressors .

The kick and bass are typically the loudest in dance music, usually I set my kick and bass to ride at around -6 or so, and when all the other instruments are applied this will usually go up a bit, but it's always best to leave plenty of head room because you can always boost the track back up on your master later, dropping all your faders down like Equilizyme mentioned is also a very common technique, it allows you to reevaluate your levels as a listener once you feel your track is complete. but I think -2db is too high for a premaster, if your track does not feel loud enough while working on it, turn your monitors up! regards! |

you can do with your master output fade what you want, +6 is quite up hehe lots of people rather turn the master down, I prefer output at 0. However the important thing is that at the end the master fader doesn't clip , is not in + dbfs.
I set my kick often at - 13 or sometimes even lower, together with bass they share later a group aux with atleast an inserted comp on it anyways. It depends also on how busy the mix is, how many space in spectrum they have to share. If it's much, and no empty place in panorama than the frequencies add more power and master signal goes up , then the easiest way is the right faders should go down.

Thanks everybody .
I think I did the job finally, I guess I wasn't having enough high frequency on my bass, which caused the bass notes to get lost in the mix and not able to hear clearly.
Also I had an EQ on my kick that was unnecessary.
This is why I was having problems with the levels. |
