hey fellas,
say i have a few group channels going with highpasses in different bands, i apply a channels lets say hi hat to one of these groups and then want to add compression in the inserts and perhaps another eq. Would the channel be routed firstly to the group (highpass) then to the inserts or the other way around?
im using cubase sx

Alternatively you can create a new group called "Hihat Percussion" with a compressor on it, and then pipe the hihats over to it via a send effect. Get your compression right and then mix the compressed hihats back in with the original.
Voila, NYC style drum compression. Kinda. |

hey,
if i understood correctly what you mean, then put your insert fx on your hat channels and then route that channel to the group.

yes this is what i mean, what im basically trying to set up is a eq-comp-eq chain with easy access to multiple highpass of different bands on spectrum highpassing with the use of group channels that i can go "right this needs to be highpassed ill send to this group".
Now i want to be able to send to the group first to notch out the main freqs ready for compression. i usually route it to the group in the box which is the output routing on top of the channels settings in the mixer. would the signal firstly go through the chain to the group then onto the inserts where i have the compression or would the signal chain firstly go to the inserts where i have compression then onto the group channel routed to the output? Basically im trying to get knowledge how the signal goes through the chain. Also on that note what about sends? does a signal first go to inserts then sends or visa versa? Would i be able to put the group highpasses here instead? |

ahhhh *slaps forehead* silly me of course the signal would go to the group last if routed to the OUTPUT! i was somehow hoping to get the signal going through the group first and then off to the compressor on inserts but its not possible i dont think. Unless i were to put the group with the highpass as a send fx and then the output of the channel to ANOTHER group with the compression and necessary fx, yeah that sounds like it would do the trick! sweeeeeeeet!
Would it be a good idea to compress certain percussive elements together for example OHH and CHH, would this defeat the purpose of compression to bring it to its own dynamic range? whats everyones thoughts on group compression? |
