hi everybody,
theres something thats giving me something to think about....it seems funny but every time i record a sound which otherwise sounds quite nice into cubase, im losing texture and volume...sounds thinner as well...i have an echo layla soundcard and a soundcraft spirit desk...nothing stupid ive done like left the low cut on...good levels on the soundcard software, good levels in the input channels in cubase..so i would like your opinion on whether or not you feel quality is effected whilst recording into cubase...
maybe its just me........: )

its best to get as 'hot' signal as possible. to much normalize/gain lifts the noise floor.

Do you mean just Cubase and not other software?

One thing I can think of is if you have monitoring or echo on, you get comb filtering as the signal gets sent back out and mixes with the original signal. (I mute the output of the channel I am recording on otherwise I get this but I am not using Cubase).

Alex: You shouldn't go as hot as possible. Go for peaks arround -6dB. The closer you get to 0 dB, the more risks of tiny peaks that you can't even see on the meters but still clip. Also, the closer you get to the limits of your converters. Recording at 24 bit gives plenty of room before noise and quantizing becomes an issue.
