all i can say is that you should be real happy with your Mix and even happier after applying some sort of compression to the whole track..

you should be able to hear every element in the mix and nothing should fight for frequencie space..
at least not much there will always be somekind of frequency overlapings, best way to aviod such thing is to be real cautious and alert when you arrange..

I think you know when it´s ready, thats the whole point, if you are uncertain then you are not ready.

the best thing you could do is to post the tune on this forum or some other place where you can get critics on the track! other people can often give you some very nice ideas and suggestions that gets your juices flowing again...

thats all i can say! if you only want feedback from artists that has a release please overlook my post..

Make it as close as possible to mastered tracks. It's that simple.

Mike A, hehe so all of a sudden it´s simple?

quality is something to worry about when you are done with the musical aspects... for some reason its easier that way. Having all aspects going on in your mind all at one when composing will get you confused and the creativity might get blocked, thats how it is for me somtimes when i mix diffrent processes... i think its like that cause every process needs full attention/care...

all artists lack punch in some area when they compose, thats something to take care of when you have everything fleshed out, but many guys clutter down all the channels and leave no room left for adjustments.. it might have gone fast but in the end its a mess and the mind says NO i cant work more with this, so my tips would be to organize your self so you can relax and get a good overview of the project when you are about to fine mix...

Maybe it has nothing to do with the topic, but just generally speaking

And an additional question: If you have a mixdown, let's say an average one, what would be improved by mastering? And what (mastering techniques) should already be in the mixdown? ok, 2 questions

Bandarlog - When you're mixing your track it's mostly about equalising and compression. (in that order btw) Different tracks need different equalising and compression settings, so listen through your track carefully to get an idea of what needs cutting/boosting and where to do it.

Mastering is like polishing. It can make something good sound better, but it won't make a bad mix sound good.

So true Shroomy!

Mastering is a perfect example of the GIGO-principle: Garbage In, Garbage Out. Too many producers rely on the phrases: "fix it in the mix", or "let mastering handle that". To get the best possible end-product, you should be carefull to get the most optimal results at the different phases: sound design, composing, arranging, mixing and finally mastering. Don't think you can polish over something bad - it won't work.

Some people say, that after mastering you can expect 30% better sound, but how on earth is something like that measured? I don't know, but decent mastering definetly makes a track live and breathe more, and it can make music leap out of the speakers instead of struggling to leave the membranes.

I released a track on Inpsyde Media some years back, and of course they mastered it to fit the compilation it was on. I put my track through a TC finalizer myself, and I have to admit that I couldn't hear any difference between my own version, and the one released.

I don't think I have a point with this, but I would like to support Triptocomas idea - when you're done, you'll know it. Hopefully, you'll feel it in your bones (I've only tried that once), but you're not done untill every little flaw is eliminated. Of course, listening back on something you were satisfied with years ago, you discover new flaws, but for the time being... You'll know

GTN, i dont see the point of all this, every tune sounds different and quality always differ...

there are many tunes that sound very poorish that gets released... sometimes its a matter of musical content... i still listen to old classics, not cause of the great quality but cause of the musical content...

i would suggest again: Ask others if they think your tune is ready for the dancefloors... i dont think you will get anywhere by comparing other works to your own.. it might get you confused instead..

Trust your instinct!

And if you feel like it you could always contact this guy and see what he has to say

http://www.xarcmastering.com/

he offers a demo try for free, if im not wrong..
I bet he could give you some real good pointers!

laters and good luck!
