First of all make everything DEFAULT, reset all knobs and band selectors by CONTROL + clicking them (in case you don't have a clean INIT preset).

Then begin by just selectting the kind of knee you want for your sound, i usually use the first ones that do not distort that much.

After that you can move the band control points left or right (not rising / lowering yet), find where is the energy of your sound coming from and pretty much lock it without rising dB yet just play with lateral controls.

Then you can begin rising and lowering bands... there are many combinations and it depends on your original sound. I just wouldn't advice distorting the lowend it will mud the bass. Personally i just rise some of the mids and highs but i've seen people squash the bands up to several dB and then reducing harshness with the knobs... so i guess this is about taste and experience.

Be careful since you cand spend hours on quadrafuzz tweaking just to decide that it was better not to insert it in the first place LOL... i like quadrafuzz on my basslines but just as makeup and to bring some of the mid high fqncies up. Also try to achieve a very decent sound in your bassline BEFORE inserting quadrafuzz because it ain't a magic-enhace-my-bass tool and it goes with the "garbage in-out" rule.

good luck

+1. Don't overdo the Quadrafuzz. Your bass shouldn't sound like you have massive distortion or anything like that. Most of the time, it shouldn't sound like there's any distortion on it at all. It should just sound bigger/more rounded with quadrafuzz added.           www.musicproductionnatural.com || www.facebook.com/djamoeba | facebook page

This.

Once I find a good bass sound, if I decide to use Quadrafuzz on it, I'll spend 10-15 minutes finding a good setting then leave it at that. Next time I work on the project I'll duplicate the bass track and tweak some more if I feel it would benefit the sound. After a few times of doing this I'll have 3-4 different copies of the same bass with different quadrafuzz/eq settings and I choose the best one. Usually it's always the 1st or second.

quadrafuzz is good for laying basslines, eg one synth going to two Fx sends on pre fader, turn main channel down. one send have the lo band and the other the mid band

there is no alternative to quadrafuzz.. you use it or you don't... but there is nothing like it outhere.

Im using ableton now and one of the things i missed the most from cubase was the quadrafuzz then i found this old version that works in live... i used many multiband thinguies but there is nothing like QF.

Trash, devastor and the ohm ones are pretty nice distortions tho.

Re Trash.

The way I see it is this. Its a fantastic distortion plugin, one of my very favourites - I use it on *a lot* of elements within each song.

But it isn't anything like Quadrafuzz, which is really quite unique.

I don't actually like quadrafuzz at all, and never use it on bass... but if that is the sound you are after, then it has to be QF. It just sounds very very dull to me - I'd far rather go for trash, which can produce considerably more varieties of tone, both in terms of number of distortion models, and how those models behave. And I would use it on bass. And thats before we get to the rest of its features!

i always used qf on bass in the beginning. then i starte to a/b my basslines with and without quadrafuzz and you totally fuck up your flow and harmonics of the bass. you squash it totally. i know it can can make that plastic edgy texture you aim for in full on, but try to get that from the synth itself..
nice tools for some more mojo are the bbe sonic maximizer or the free bootsy nasty lf (great stuff for free, really!!)..

what i do like the fuzz for is kick drums though.. can add that extra knocking to a soft kick drum and can make it cut throgh the mix better..

but i always lower the input and output of quadrafuzz 1-2dB then it sound much clearer and not so dull and distorted any more
