both...i go for sometime classic chords when appropriate because depending on the sound of your track it can get emotions going for the listener however switching it up and using you creativity is really what the production process is all about           ~SPAWNmaster~

i'm no composition or music theory master but in a sense i like that, i think that part of being psycadelic is to be able to change concepts and so scales in a song or at least, sometimes, get some irregular notes in there, yes, i know you can use chords for that but i like to make my own scales some(most of the)times.

anyway using scales or not please don't fall into that MIDI FILES copy paste system that many producers make use of to created their tracks from start to end...except BD and bass......pfffff, "this is nice, now i've got to get a melody/drums in here...c:midi files.........", create your own art... for good or bad...

basically, i start with the bassline. when the bassline sounds good, i move over to the midikeyboard and try to let some magic happen, i record some sequences and pick the ones i like. usually they are all more or less in the same scale, but don't depennd on major / minor scales, try to use more exotic ones like phrygian, lydian etc.

Not to be picky but phrygian, lydian, etc are just major/minor scales only with different note being used as the root.

Music theory is a great tool, but mostly only after you have internalized it. If you are completely new to it, expect to spend a couple years working with it and understanding it, becoming a slaze to it and eventually hating it, but ideally in the end you'll just end up ignoring it and trusting your ears, which will have unconsciously absorbed it by that time. Music theory is there to explain how a piece of music works, not how to write a piece of music.

For the new artist trying to pick up some useful bits of musical knowledge, I'd recommend study more about rhythm first and worry about proper harmonic theory later. Alot of psy is actually quite disonate and draws its interest from the rhythmical patterns of the leads rather than the actually notes, which might be bending in, out and through different notes at random.           New Album: Jikkenteki - Flights Of Infinity
