Use XP...... or XP64 if your desperate of more memory management

have you had personal experience with vista and daws? more text.......

Yes i have, i had vista trown in my face thanks to aOEM-License from HP
And i felt that vista was not a proper OS, a OS that requires you to have 4 gigs of ram..... 4 cores to run smoothly is NOT a OS if you ask me, i want a efficient and easy to operate with no visual bullshit. As you can see from that perspective vista is not for me.
Im still on XP32 can´t say i´ve had a urge to get past the 3.5GB of Mem that XP32 can handle. Windows 7 64 is going to be my next upgrade which is what M$ should have made the next generation OS instead of Vista.

I´ve had this discussion with many producers before that uses Vista they all have said the same things that -Oh it works like a charm. And i have told them to "downgrade" to XP and convinced them to actually do it, guess what! majority of them stayed with XP since they noticed how much more efficient and faster XP compared to Vista.

I see no benefits using vista compared to XP unless you want Aero and Dx11. Please enlight me if there IS any benefits using vista as a DAW OS, cause i can´t see it.
I hope you won´t mention UAC as a benefit ;D

i think you are much more passionate about this issue than i am. i'm neither msft nor vista fan boy. i have memory which i would like to utilize. therefore i wanted to install a 64-bit OS. my choices were XP or Vista. i decided to go with Vista because 1) steinberg doesn't officially support 64-bit XP (and cubase is my main sequencer of choice), though i know some people run cubase on 64-bit xp without any issues. and 2) i had a copy of vista laying around which i got for free at microsoft's Visual Studio 2008 launch (which i also got for free, as well as trial versions of sql server and windows server and a spiffy msft bag. whatever).

if you don't like all the visual bullshit, it takes about 2 seconds to disable aero (i did).

i do have a quad and 6 gigs of ram. i didn't buy them specifically for vista, but i already have them. so that's not an issue for me.

i mean, it's just a shell in which other programs run. if it allows me to do everything i want and doesn't get in my way, then what more do i need? if i start having major issues with it, i'll give something else a try. i can't enlighten you if there's any benefit to using it. i never claimed there was and i fail to see how an OS should provide any benefits to specifically music production needs in the first place.

anyway, this thread is not about how great vista is. i have about a week of experience with it and so far so good.

is that alright?

extremely interested in this thread as i am slowly gearing up for an i7 build! septa, a few questions if you don't mind...

1) how much did it cost you all together?

2) did you end up ordering parts from newegg?

3) was this your first build?

thanks!

lol @ the V8 cooler. I have one myself and couldn't believe my eyes when I opened it. At first I thought they just decided to pack it in a big box, but no, it's that big.

not at all.

1) it was around $1200 (US dollars) without monitors which i already had.
2) yes, everything was from newegg. they keep getting lots of my money, since i buy pretty much everything electronics-related from them. the shipping is extremely fast, the customer service is great (the few times i had to deal with them), and i just really like the layout of the site and all the helpful user reviews. also, once you buy a few things from them, they start sending you newsletters with promo codes that actually do save you money (the last thing i ordered from them was $30 cheaper than what was posted on the site itself... and considering it was an $80 item, that's a big discount). and after i placed the order for all my parts, they sent me a 10% off my next entire order. this is a very effective strategy they are using, since i can't stop buying shit from them.
3) this was my second build.

oh, and tomos was right. i didn't really get on with the trackmouse. i mean, it's great for moving great distances (i have two 22"), but it's the precise positioning that kind of sucks. i tried and tried, but gave up and just ordered a wireless mouse (and keyboard. and guess who got more of my money...).
