I don't know much about i7 overclocking. I'm sure enthusiasts will enjoy experimentation, but i7s have a built in overclock anyway -

Programs that don't support multi-core CPUs are at an obvious disadvantage. A really cool feature of the i7 is that it turns off all the other cores (to prevent overheating) then it increases the clock speed of a single execution core which boosts performance for single CPU aware applications.

This is the first time in Intel history that overclocking has been a touted feature and not something frowned upon by the chip manufacturer.

I wouldn't say that's exactly accurate. The Extreme Edition chips were obviously for the overclockers out there. Cost an arm and a leg though!

Hmm I wasn't aware of that feature on the i7 though...that is pretty cool! However that would only be an advantage in single core applications, right? I think you'd get better performance by turning that off and just overclocking all 4 cores.

yes but the i7 have a different aproach to overclock than the core2 cpus.. much more tweaking and more parameters and for someone not knowing what is he doing than a direct solution for that on the fly power boost is more than welcome!

also many apps dont support multi core so its an overkill to have the cpu on constant 4 core overclock when its not really usefull!

im upgrading this summer from my humble e8400 @3600mhz to an i7 920 and i hope that it is really that good as it looks!           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

so i placed my order on wednesday and should be getting everything on monday.

i've been reading up on overclocking i7's and might cautiously mess around with it. mostly for experience rather than squeezing even more juice than it already provides. i will definitely not be sacrificing any degree of stability for faster speeds.

i also decided to give 64-bit Vista a shot.

thanks a lot for your help, dudes.           https://soundcloud.com/dead-end-dance

The risks of overclocking are really overstated if you don't change settings in huge increments and stay within safe voltage ratings. Most Intel chips will be fine up to 70 degrees celsius at full load but will still probably operate all the way at 100, although I wouldn't risk it. Stability testing is key as well of course.

With a decent aftermarket cooler you wouldn't have anything to worry about as long as you're monitoring your temps and doing your research.

Anyways, congrats, I'm certainly jealous.

Good luck with 64 Vista...even if you like it, give XP a shot again a few months later; that sealed the deal for me! No more Vista.

Well... everything came on Monday, but of course life decided to get in the way specifically this week. And it doesn't look like i will be able to do anything until the weekend. Which is fucking annoying as hell because i have a stack of shiny boxes with my name on them. Though I'm still waiting for my copy of Cubase 5.

But i'll definitely update this thread with my progress.           https://soundcloud.com/dead-end-dance

I am looking to get myself 2 HDD's with it, one raptor 320gb 10.000 rpm for OS and programs and one other one (forget what it was) 7200 rpm for data, both with 32mb cache. That should according to that guy make me free of any bottlenecks whatsoever.

Any idea if those SSD disks last as long
Free of bottlenecks? sounds like he has no idea what he´s talking about, the mechanical HDD is one of the biggest bottlenecks in a PC-system today even if you go for a raptor it will STILL be a bottleneck, Even a SSD-disk today is a bottleneck but if you want the fastest available go for SSD-disks instantly.
And you will also lower the average noise from your computer especially if you replace the noisy raptors with a totaly quiet SSD-disk.

Thanks for your oh so friendly and "smart" advice.

Any idea on the longevity of those hdd's and the capacity limits?           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

How does the Phenom II X4 955 compare to the Core i7 I7-920? I'm getting an upgrade in the next couple of months and have been hooked on the i7 for a while, but looks like the guys over at AMD are back in the game.

Any of you have experiences with these two processors in regards to production? Which is better, and which is more future-proof as you see it?           DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

I currently use the PII 920 with the AM2+ works like a charm only minor backdraw is that im using ddr2 but i haven´t seen any major performance improvement so far that justifies the price for ddr3 atm. Got my system with the PII 920, 4 gigs Corsair dominator DDR2 and asus M3A78-T motherboard payed little over 400€ today you can get it for less.

If you want pure performance and are willing to invest alot of money you go for i7, if your on a budget and want most bang for your buck you go for AMD Phenom II. Also the Phenom consumes less power which also will save you electrical bill-headaches

AM3 CPUs will fit in a AM2/+ motherboard thats the beauty of the backward-compatibility sollution from AMD           Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915

so i guess i should update this thread as promised.

the build itself:

- V8 is freaking HUGE. it's almost 3 times bigger than the stock cooler. also, the install is kind of a pain in the ass (not in absolute sense, but probably relative to most coolers). i screwed the mobo to the case first and then realized i have to screw the V8 to the BACK of the mobo. doh! so then i installed the V8, screwed the mobo back to the case. then went to install the PSU and realized there is no way for me to put the PSU in it's compartment since the V8 is so huge and is getting in the way. doh! so, yeah, i kind of slowed down after that.

- SOLO is a little tight, as mentioned previously. so it was kind of a pain to work with it (especially during these pointless mobo manipulations). but since you really only need to deal with that once, that's not such a big deal. the cable management is pretty slick, so the airflow is improved by the build being so clean (all the "ugly truth" is behind the side the mobo is attached to). the harddrive rubber mounts are awesome. and the case itself looks cool
too.

- Corsair HX520 PSU is modular, so i only have the cables i really need, which is nice. i *thought* i got a defected unit though. well, actually, i thought it were the harddrives first. i had a reallly high pitched noise coming from the computer. it took me a couple of days to notice it, but once i latched onto it, it was simply impossible to ignore and it started giving me a headache. it seemed like it was related to disk activity, since it would slightly change pitch (though still being really high). but after moving my head around the case, i realized it definitely was coming from the PSU's fan. after some googling around, i couldn't find anything about this problem, and i just found more recommendations for this PSU, as being silent and reliable. so i was pretty much set on RMA'ing it, but luckily i decided to continue to research this issue further and discovered some info about Intel's Speedstepping features and PSUs. so i disabled C1E and EIST in the BIOS, and sure enough, the noise was gone.

OS/software:

- installed Vista 64-bit Ultimate and did some quick minor tweaks. installed Cubase 5 32-bit and 64-bit drivers for my delta 66. after loading a single instance of Prologue (included synth), i heard ASIO spikes. tried changing buffer settings - no difference. (and the only time i crashed my system so far by scrolling through buffer settings quickly while cubase was opened.... yeah, not a good idea). tried all the other synths included with cubase, same thing. wtf? back to google. finally discovered that EasyTune, which is a utility included with the mobo for monitoring temps, power management, oc settings, etc, can cause something like this and i had it running in the background so i could monitor the temps. as soon as i shut that down, the spikes went away.

- and that's it. since then, everything is peachy so far. loaded lots of plugs and haven't found anything that doesn't work yet. right now the buffer size is set to 64, so the latency is about 2-3ms. layering 5 guitars with Amplitube plugs on each was nice (after having only 2 bring my old system to its knees... and with MUCH higher latency). i had atmosphere, trilogy, massive, sylenth1, and about 15 other plugs loaded too (was just testing whether they work or not). i didn't really have a chance to work on anything yet and try to push it, but having all that working without any issues is awesome for me (coming from my P4). i don't think the CPU meter went above 3 or 4 %. oh, it runs about 30-32C idle/light use.

- vista uses about 1.5G of ram, which seems pretty heavy. however, from what i read, the way it manages ram is it loads some stuff the user MIGHT use, if it detects that you have a lot of available RAM. once you start running out of ram, it actually releases stuff you aren't using. so in that light, this doesn't mean shit. since Cubase is Large Address Aware, by default the 32-bit version should be able to access around 3.5G in a 64-bit system. so that still leaves me about 1-2G for another process, if i want to rewire into cubase or run something as stand-alone (and then sync with cubase via midiyoke or fxteleport or something). so i'm definitely glad i went with 6 gigs.

i'll report back, once i get around to really pushing it. but right now, after those few minor setbacks (shit, user-errors, really), i'm a happy camper.

Im still trying to figure out why you went for vista when windows 7 is just around the corner....... If you ask me its a complete waste of money.

around the corner? you mean, august the earliest? and what exactly am i suppose to do until then?

have you had personal experience with vista and daws? sure, i read tons of shit-talking about vista. and i'm sure it was justified prior to sp1. but at this point, i think it's more because this idea is just ingrained in the brains of everybody. it's a repeat of a repeat of some dude on the net repeat. there are way too many variables that determine whether shit will work or not. i wanted to see how it would work with my components and my needs, instead of simply accepting everything i read on the net as the ultimate truth. so even if it's "suppose" to be shit, but works for me perfectly, then that's great. and so far so good. and based on people's experiences post-sp1, i don't think my experience is anything special.

either way, no money wasted (msft developer conferences).           https://soundcloud.com/dead-end-dance

Desperate for 64bit Virus TI support, otherwise I'd move straight away and buy another 6GB Ram!
