Hello... lately i have been thinking most grooves make use of this elements / sensations / situations to create the urge to dance, most 1 or 2bar loops i have been analyzing (mostly psytrance and techno) use sounds or melodies that emulate an up / down sensation.
Have you noticed this kind of stuff? Is there any part of rhythmic that actually analyze this in a deeper way? Do you believe this has to do with nature's basic principles of CONTRAST?
Basic Kick - Kick/Snare or Ohmpa Bass are simplest examples of what i talk about... more complex stuff would involve advanced percussion work, or modulated waveforms like classic psy pitchmod saws, also buildups and bassdrops could be taken into account... everything seems to be about creating the tension and releasing it. As simple as a heartbeat? a breathing cycle?
Perhaps it is something obvious for most experienced guys around but i just hadn't noticed until now.
So now... do you have any interesting to say about it? How do you use this in your tracks?
Thank you for your time. |

Yes, you've noticed something very important in dance music production. If you get an up-down-up-down, left-right-left-right sort of groove going on, it'll move a dancefloor.
You can utilize this in a number of ways, from note placement in the octave, use of sound and silence, panorama, etc. The idea is to get a "running" or a "train" kind of feel.

Wow... you actually know what i mean!!! I always have this rollercoaster idea in mind, we are ride designers right?
Maybe it is the reason stuff like sidechain compressors are so popular since they enhance this push / pull feeling. |

Music of any kind is always a duality between order and chaos. It's not only the beat/rhythm in this trainlike up/down fashion that you need. The brain has about a 6 second attention span before it begins to lose focus and get distracted. This is why in the best trance tracks, for example, you not only have this up/down/left/right action, you always have this buildup/breakdown of sounds which follow a pattern versus sounds that generate confusion. In the case of psy-trance, the bassbeat/percussion rhythms often suffice for the "order" end of the duality which is what allows for so many constantly twisted, confusing noises. But if a producer follows even this formula for too long, the brain begins to become bored which is when change needs to be introduced along those levels as well. This is why you will hear breakdowns in good tracks... if it's nothing but BAM BAM BAM for the entirety, no matter how danceable the rhythms are by themselves, within the greater musical context, people will stop dancing out of boredom or fatigue.

Even BAM BAM BAM have contrast! The silence in between.
And it can be very trance inducing...
but of course a nice groove is always more "groovy" to dance to
Nice thread...
