Hey people.
I'm actually planning on buying a laptop specifically for production and other audio stuff. I've had a lot of trouble with the desktop being used, specifically my motherboard. Something or the other goes wrong every 5-6 months and it either gets replaced or fixed. I've bought 3 so far!
Point being, I've been eyeing laptops by DELL since they fit my budget and was wondering what few things I'd need to keep in mind while purchasing it. Is Celeron with a core 2 processor a good idea? Also, if someone could recommend me a powerfull and stable motherboard I could purchase. All in all my budget is around 1500 - 2000$.

well, i would consider at least a 2.5ghz core 2 duo ( the penryr one, which is a 45mm instead of the older 65mm ones, plus has a bigger cache, or even the newer one which i think is out already, montevina or something like that...)
and hmm...you looking into buying a motherboard for a laptop or a laptop with a trustable motherboard? if its the first option forget about it...
and if you want a decent laptop, aim for the business focused ones, not the gamer or entertainment ones, DELL has both good and bad comments, the HP business serie (not the stylish ones, those are crap) are supose to be good... and my favorite are the IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads....
then again, there are always those bloody macs, which sooner or later a mob of ppl is gonna come here telling you that everything else is crap =)
anyway...check this website http://www.notebookreview.com/
their forum sure helped me a lot choosing which one to buy
oh, and 1500USD should be more then enough to buy a really decent machine...well, you can add a bit more depending where you are... but if you buy it in the states, with about 1300 you can already buy a top laptop...

celeron = crap ... even if dual core.
(since cpu power is most important for audio production tasks)
... and if you mainboard fucksup every few month,
you should try to replace the power supply, since this *may* be the reason. http://www.myspace.com/realtimeproject |

one thing for sure bout laptops from dell is that ur going to have to buy a plug adapter, from 3 in to 2 out
if not your going to have some noise, it happened to me and i went crazy for like 2 months!!! and realize that it wasn't my cables or anyother shit, a plug converter or plug prong i believe its called is what i need it only cost 2 dollars but man what a difference it was just what the doctor ordered heheh keep that in mind and for anyone else here with the same problem there goes ur solution best regards, Deyan
the cheapest and most gratifiying thing in mystudio, crazy i tell ya |

Yes.
Don't get a Dell..you can get much better for a budget of $1500.
If you want to stick with xp or vista I recommend a Lenovo or a higher end HP or Vaio, otherwise a 2.4 ghz Macbook with at least 2GB RAM is the way to go..
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

For 2000-2500 you should be able to get a laptop that has desktop parts in it. I have a friend who has got himself one of these about a good year ago. I will try to contact him and ask him where he got it from. Pretty slick and he paid around $2800 for it. Should be cheaper now...
$2000 Can indeed also get you an awesome Mac. Right on Elad!

for that much i would get a alienware anyday...it beats any mac for sure...and yeah, you can have a SLI graphics card in it...
plus...you get that cool as hell alien head that lights up on 7 diff colors on the back of the screen (where the apple on the macs are) AND a keyboard that lights up + a bunch of LEDs all over....thats THE laptop to do a live with... people would simply freak out looking at it =D

http://www.alienwaresucksass.org/ be wary , ocelot had a bad experience with em , + in india there is practically no tech support , do good research before you spend that money , why not just get a powerful desktop ? unlimited upgrade options + cheap + will have no problems with support .. branded stuff is bad when u need for very specific needs imo , but for a mac perhaps .. good luck

Ok, So I guess celeron seems to be out of the picture.
I really don't have any problem with purchasing a Mac but in India the prices are pretty high. I haven't really been to the 2-3 stores that deal with Macs here to find out the prices but I'm sure its a good 30% increase than the normal rates. I guess I'll visit the store tomo.
As far as HP goes, almost everyone I know has an HP laptop but support from them has been terrible. So bad that issues with part replacements under warranty have taken up to 10-12 days!
Anyway, thanks for the heads up people. Still going to explore my options.
@Brasirc - thanks for the website - really helpful!

well..if you want a suggestion...
go for the Lenovo T61p, doesnt get any better then that... (or the T61...same chassis, almost same everything, just a weaker graphic card and some other really small diffs)
(even tho it is the best around, it used to have some problems related to the strong graphics card + 2 RAMs at same time...some kind of power management problem on the MOBO...but it has already been fixed)
oh, and you're welcome =p un-fucking-believable |
