I don't have any links, but having been involved in the punk scene since 1980 in San Francisco, in numerous bands all through the 80s, created a skate/punk zine and even had a record store selling music out the back of my car at the skate spots, I should be able to give some suggestions, but I'm just too damn lazy. There's so many good bands, and it depends how you like it. I was always into the hard fast thrash with smart but not preachy lyrics.
Well, I always liked more the British punk. It's different than American punk. Different reasons for it, different people from different social classes and different music, though they're not both called punk for nothing.
So for me its:
Sex Pistols- for being... well.. the Sex Pistols.
Toy Dolls- for being the fastest, funniest and being tattooed on my ass.
Clash- for the ska/ragga melancholic feel.
Also liked Peter and the Test Tube Babies & Anti Nowhere League.
In the American side of the ocean, it has to be Black Flag & The Germs. And the Ramones of course, but they're not truly punk for me.

BTW, when I was in SF in 1990 I saw a great documentary about the late 70s California punk scene featuring The Germs and Black Flag among others with some crazy stories. Rented it in a b-movies video store. Wasn't able to locate it since and I have no clue how it was called. Was a good one.

^^ was it The Decline of Western Civilization? If so that is a classic. My friend Eugene is interviewed in it. Good documentary of the punk scene in Los Angeles in the early days.
Sorry for the long delay. Check this whole album it's a split with Blatz (also good) but the Filth cd just kicks ass!!! It's on my top ten "to drive to" but goes for headphones and loud and home as well.
And if you haven't seen Another State of Mind watch that. It's a great piece of history and inspiration
Peace

Here is song from my old neighbor tonys band STFU from my warehouse days in oakland 10 years ago. While I was throwing psy parties at night they were doing punk rock in the parking lot in the afternoon which generated the largest mound of empty bud cans I have seen in my life. Real hard core punks for life.
