Hey everyone
when you have a finished mix what do u use and what techniques apply to pump the entire track so it stays very loud and at the same time doesn't clip. I know many people will say its compressors and maximazers but still it doesn't pump it till max. What I mean by pumping is that its still pleasant for ears and loud as possible.
Check this scrshot

its super loud and sounds nice, how da hell do they do it?
cheers

leave the maxxing to the mastering engineers, try to get as loud as you can in mixing, without boosting the master bus too much.
a mastering engeneer will probably compress the mix a lot using single/multi band compression or limiting, plus some standard methods of equalization...

You need to use a limiter. Good ones are waves and the voxengo elephant 2.
Load ur track for example into wavelab and load into the plugin chain waves l3. Now set output ceiling to -0.2, better not directly 0 coz it could be seen as clipping. Now move down ur treshold till ur sound gets loud enough.
How much? -it depends. Best is to make a loud mix, without clipping so u don't need much normalizing and limiting. Before u start u should listen to the track where the peak lies, for example -4.5 db. Now u use a treshold of -4.5, this would be normalizing, plus (e.g) 3.5 db, so all in all a treshold of 8 db.
This seems to be much, but remember it also contains the part of normalizing, but u did all in one step

L3 or L2.... just set the ceiling level to -.02 and do not set the threshold more then -2 to -3.... otherwise youre doing a diffrent action... this should do the trick.
the key is to have your mix done properly, otherwise you will get distortions in the sounds after the application.

Limiting is a essential, it can't be explained to much

btw - important to say that if u wanna send your track to a label - avoid using any of this stuff..... this is pseudo mastering and will hurt the ability of the masterererererer to master your music.

thanks everyone for your replies
ok as far as i understand I should end up with as loud mix as possible without ceiling and then boost the overall rms using maximizers with ceilling of -0.2? |

absolutely right.
even if you have the tools and the ears to do a propper mastering, i would give your tracks to another mastering engineer, because he hears your tracks from a different point of view and notices things, which you as writer and producer don't notice.
its quite the same like writing a book. there is always min. a second person who is reading through your text, in order to find mistakes
