well, when u put a controller on a certain parameter , you 'modulate' it, and a modulator is the something that changes that parameter (can be you, an lfo, an envelope,...). The pulse width is the width of the first part of a square wave, and dramatically changes the timbre of the square wave. So if you manually turn the pulse width knob, then u are the pulse width modulator that causes pulse width modulation... If that knob is on a synth, then it's very probably one of the lfo's that's hard wired as a pulse width modulator... Look in ur manual to see which device is modulating the pulse width if u turn that knob... |

no colin , ure not wrong .. some synths do allow any waveform to be pulse width modulated .. i think they have a special algorithm for it ... |

You are right, Colin.
Some synths allow you to change the ramp of the sawtooth oscilator. (You get a flat bit in the wave so it resembles square wave pulse width modulation a bit). Then there are synths that have very flexible oscilators like the Z1.
In the Z1 you can can modify a sine wave to a saw wave with everything in between. You can offset the waveform over the zero-crossing axis with wave shape clipping if you increase the level which basicly means you can go from square to saw. Then you have more waveshape modulation which on a sawtooth goes from the standard wave to a double frequency wave with all the steps in between (This is not pitch! This gives you double the harmonics at the same pitch and other stuff in between). The triangle goes from triangle to ramp wave with stuff in between etc etc ... And that is just the basic oscilator model. There are 13 oscilator model types.

hey there boys!
in reFX Vanguard and on my Novation KS synth you can apply PW Modulation to all the waveforms without restrictions. Nice parameter to tweak, i love it.

great option , in the nordlead realy is apply only to square or pulse (when its exact middle it is square , with any other setting its pulse)
but in FL you can modify any wav to any shape possible.. so it is exist and sound awsome (i think they use somekind of FM may be to do it? )
