i m havin this riff problem lately...
most of the riffs i record with the keyboard, but even i think they are good when i put it on the song it is just not ''psy'' enough, looks like more electro, house
how to create those twisted leads, so twisted that most of the times i cant even tell what notes are playing, but they sound soo good to my ears...that psychedelic feeling i think you know what i m talkin about

Then you have problems with patch synthesis not with riffs...
Try applying some pitch modulation to an lfo or envelope... that will make the sound flow through pitches creating squelchy detuning sounds that will sound nice through a pingpong delay...
When recording midi through keyboard then rearrange notes, quantize, add some more short notes and fix its overall note placement for good flowing lead sound.
Now... if i may, i highly recommend the Cosmosis Killer Leads online series that will help you get most of the sounds you have heard in commercial psy and also to develop the necessary skills to put any sound you think of into a synth's patch.
Funny you bring this thread up again... i was remembering how it was when most of my riffs sounded uninteresting and dull... i have learned much about this but it is hard to put into words i would advice listening a lot of psytrance leads and recognizing where contrast occurs between strong and weak steps, also how tension-release happens in a 4/4 loop.

Yeah, the Killer Leads from Cosmosis could help you there.
Try using more than one filter and automate their cutoffs different, that alone gets nice "psyish" results sometimes. |
