Hallo... this is for you all to post any tips related to riffs in psytrance.
I know there are no rules and all of that, but many times i find myself creating riffs that sound more house or techno like so in a way i know there are certain trance inducing patterns.
For a start, i mainly think of offbeat patterns and octaved arpegiators in 8ths or 16ths...
what do you have to share?

I prefer to play each note with my hands, but I would love to try the seq from ucapps or write a software solution in max or pd which can be controlled with a external box or maybe played in a dedicated box ?!

Try producing a house / techno track.
It'll give you (or any of us who will do it him/her self) new angles to look at, and not just in the riffs area.

do you play or draw the notes???
sometimes the robotic feelings when drawing notes, specially when its a busy pattern gives that psy kinda touch to the leads.
also find some midi generator plugin and have the machine play them for you. he he seriously..

of course i feel there are a few rules, or else anything u create would be understood as psy or vice versa now wouldn't it
i feel simple things like backing keys for example,if too bright would sound euroish..and leads..too long the notes/length..sometimes sound cheese..agree..that lfo s help big time..but usually i feel a 'riff' ..where u can actually figure out a chord/chords..sounds usually house or euro..coz sounds pretty much basic sometimes

I do both.
Thanks everyone for your answers. I don't suck at psytrance lead / arps just wanted to "trace a route"
Your advices are highly apreciated, i've been reading similar posts and asking many people about this, seems like getting closer to what i want to understand.

It could be the off-beat patterns. Psy leads tend to be more driving. So add notes on the first beat to make them more driving. Think rock riffs rather than reggae/dub riffs.

I usually like to write leads with 16th and 32th notes with few silence between them and some longer notes here or there... but its matter of taste. And for melodic riffs, not using noise but something leady, I like to write on harmonic scale, which sounds kinda darky-psytrance like, also from influence of the heavy metal style. The harmonic minor scale progression: A B C D E F G#
The beauty of this is scale in my opinion, is the two semitone transitions betwwen 2nd a 3rd and 7th and root. Its a very nice riff exercise to focus on these semitones and add a couple of more notes inside...
But as everything, theory is just that... write a lot of leads and see what your taste is really like.
Interesting thread. |
