Hey

I have done a surround mix in 5.1 once in one of my tracks and i think its really nice to listen to psytrance music in surround.
Have in mind that there is not that much music mixed in surround so you are pretty free to do anything and experiment.
I think that the base idea is to route the kick and the bass at the subwoofer and the middle speaker, then start widening your mix at the L-R front speakers with leads and percussions and then your pads and for sure your time effects at the rear speakers.
This is a typical stereo mix with only few surround stuff. but its a good start. if you start putting everything here and there from the beggining you will need 16 days, not hours, to finish your mix. It is a lot easier to start that way.
Another way is to make a plan with the position of every sound before you go to the studio. so you save time for experiment with effects and stuff

I have listened to some songs mixed in surround that had for example all the drums at the front left speaker all the vocals at the right speaker some percussions and reverbs at the rear speakers and only the bass at the middle speaker and subwoofer. that one was really nice, there is no rule as you see, but it was not psytrance

in which daw are you going to do this? i used protools for mine (just for surround mixing, the whole tune was made in cubase).

I know only one psytrance track mixed in surround and it was made by Infected Mushroom.

hey Alekzis ! Nice read Thanks ...good ideas..
My track is 95% ready but was intended for stereo ... I made the track with logic and cubase, but surround studio I ecan use is with nuendo.... later Id like to go for protools for mastering. But dunno if it is possible to master a surround mix in a stereo studio,..well questions over questions..but fun is on my side and yeah I know this is an area without ANY laws and free for experimentation..but I guess in psytrance music there can be more structure about it someday as in rock music for instance... where its already made tracks with drums behind for instance.. I think kick and bass is a must have for center..but well Ill see how different things will work. Also I need to get to listen to some psy tracks.. can you say what track from Infected it is? Much thanks for your input in this thread.. Im also curious how many producers from this forum can say sth to this topic...any input on point is welcome Peace           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

Hi traveller

very nice idea.. i was thinking of it some years ago but never did it due to lack of a proper surround monitoring system..

As u and alekzis said, keep kick and bass on center and basic percs on front channels and the other stuff.. just let them fly around

If it was possible to have surround systems on parties, i m sure that most tracks whould had been produced that way..

my dream club is with a 360degrees visual and audio system

have fun.. i d love to listen it when done           +-+talking with ali3ns around the universe+-+

yeah I'll post my track when its finished Yeah the mix is a interesting process you can get so much different mixes with the 6 channels.. this gonna take a bit time to make it satisfying me totaly. What I found it is that its not that good imo to assign lfe to all channels .In my track I have around 30 channels so far and today I tend to leave only kick and bass on lfe and some prefader aux channel with a timestretched vocal. All others are going through 5.1 output but are not assigned to the lfe ..it's an interesting area for me.I keep bass and kick in mono but output to 5.1 I keep it a bit towards center but assign lots of lfe + on the output ...but am not totaly satisfied with the mix..yesterday I knew less but it sounded better with the lows somehow haha Peace ..I like to rotate even with kick its sometimes nice, but espeialy with pads its nice..gonna test some take off shit with glide modulation and rotate it next .Love it.Peace           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

We used to do it in uni, it was awesome as long as you dont over do it.

Keep the obvious stuff in stereo, kick, bass etc but use the background effects to good effect by moving them the soundscape.

Squelches are nice being run around the whole set of speakers, and background acid lines etc moving in the opposite directoin can be fun.

enjoy,
