well as much as i would love to have such a modular setup i still think softsynths are not to be missed for the sonic possibilities they offer you.. even if you do not have that hands on feeling. best of both worlds for maximum possibilities and fun would be my way to go if money is not an issue

diva is definitely the choice to go for the best sounding analogue emulation in the digital world, but beware, it eats your cpu in not time, even with one patch loaded only...
but then again you are used to work with analogue gear and recording one track at a time, so nothing new at all
i do not know what kind of music you are into, but for cinematic ambient stuff (i think i heard some ambient from you here on the forum) i would really recommend omnisphere and / or alchemy.
mixing oscillators and samples for multilayered pads and atmospheres is such a great thing and creates timbres not heard in analogue. put an lfo or envelope on almost any parameter a synth and sample can offer you makes so much complexity possible.. there is so much more spice for the soup to find in these two

cool, thanks for the suggestions!
i should be ok, have a quad core 3.4GHz and 16GB RAM, and as you say, will mostly only ever be recording one stereo sound at a time (through analogue outboard).
i know omnisphere and alchemy are probably great, but i'm always loathe to learn new synths and architecture, so i will probably stick to the wavestation for my ambient and pad sounds. old habits die hard, and she's been a pretty much constant companion for the last twenty years!
if i don't get diva i'd probably go for a used matrix 1000 instead. used to have one back in japan and loved it.
i'm used to putting lfos and envelopes (and uncertainty generators and wavefolders) on weird things from my modular daze.
